Dean Baker's commentary on economic reporting

Housing Vacancy Rate Hits New Record: Media Don't Notice

You would think that an industry that almost completely missed an $8 trillion housing bubble would be trying to do a better job in reporting on the housing market: But that does not appear to be the case. The Census Bureau reported that the number of vacant units hit a new record high yesterday and it appears that no one noticed.

Housing Vacancy Rate Hits New Record

IMO we need much lower prices.

Location, location, location.

Have you even considered other sources of info such as Torto Wheaton or Real Capital Research?

As i mentioned b4, perhaps you are just like the others you have criticized so much - using selective info that ONLY BENEFIT your point.

Perhaps you are not.

Housing has stabilized. The Fed has saved the world. Now move along.

Maybe the media is waiting for a press release from the National Association of Realtors.

I guess you didn't get the memo that this months story is that the housing market is on the road to recovery.

This is why I read you and Calculated Risk and canceled my subscription to the Washington Post.

UK Reporting: 5% of homes
reported vacant 3Q 2009.

The crazy quote of the day:

"Because twice as many people own their homes as rent, the total vacancy rate -- 14.5% in the third quarter -- exceeds the sum of the homeowner and rental vacancy rates."

See

Maybe the media is waiting for a press release from the National Association of Realtors.
