Dean Baker's commentary on economic reporting

China Pledges to Keep Its Per Capita Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Less One-Third U.S. Levels, but the NYT Is Not Satisfied

Any article that is trying to honestly discuss China's contribution to restricting greenhouse gas emissions would point out that China currently emits about one quarter as much per person as the United States. This NYT article flunks the test, failing to convey the most basic information to readers.

That's a good point. And it's so easy to include. I find the press tends to make similar omissions when discussing the total size of economies. Or when discussing GDP growth, they fail to compare it to population growth in a country.

Population is just one measure of size, though. On a GDP per BTU basis, the US and China are pretty comparable, so the Chinese are just doing less with less.
