RIP, ANDREW OLMSTED.
Andrew Olmsted was a writer and blogger at the wonderful site Obsidian Wings. He was also a soldier in Iraq. Yesterday, he was killed. Before he left to serve his deployment, he wrote a post to be published in the event of his death. It is wise and warm and witty and moving. It is also poignant beyond words, and should be read by all. Oddly, what I'm finding worst is that I desperately want to write Andrew and tell him how much I liked it. That I can't do that somehow makes his death all too real. Sadly, I know neither how to properly celebrate nor grieve Andrew, but after reading this, I desperately want to do both. The closest I can come is to ask you to click on the link, and to promise that it will not be a maudlin experience, but a deeply human one.

Please fix the spelling of Olmsted (in the title and first sentence) before Gary Farber gets here.

Ugh. Can't believe I did that. Thanks.

Actually it's still wrong in the title. You've got an extra "d" in there.

I think that this has been one of the most devastatingly human experiences I've ever had as a blog reader. I just started reading ObWi in the last six months and I came to look forward to G'Kar's posts. It so hard to believe that I feel this way about someone who was "just" a pseudonymous blogger...but I'm literally crying.

Really tragic for someone who was posting all the time while serving in Iraq. There is no end to this suffering.

Your post, Ezra, is also eloquent in its way.
