But al-Qaqaa is so....Quaint
Brad Plumer, in a post on the nauseating Hilla bombing, notes that a car bomb has to be pretty fucking big to push the death toll over a 100 people, and so there's probably an al-Qaqaa connection here though, he says, there's probably not much point in revisiting the issue.
True enough, but wouldn't it have been nice if, at some point, we had actually visited the issue? I mean, I know we parachuted in and mixed it with the rest of the election's final week feces-throwing, but that seems to have worked to divert attention from it, not interest anyone in a full-fledged investigation. Indeed, we seem to have written it off as part of the 2004 election warfare, and once the polls closed, everyone agreed to leave it in the past. Everyone, I guess, save the insurgents.

Admittedly, though, I could be very wrong about the car bombing. I'm always surprised that car bombs don't kill more people, so this one seemed awfully large, but maybe it's just a matter of circumstance and the fact that the recruits were all lined up. Ugh. Fucking hate reading these stories.

No, I was thinking the same thing. It had to be pretty fucking huge. I figure a couple of pounds strapped on a guy in the middle of a crowded bus usually (and isn't amazing to think that this happens frequently enough that you can actually perform STATISTICS on such an act) kills between 5 and 10 people. On a crowded bus. I'm thinking this thing had to either be an order of magnitude (maybe two) more powerful than the stuff Hamas is handing out or one or two orders of magnitude larger. Not an amateurish piece of work, either way. I think I'm getting close to running out of sad.

There's lots and lots and lots of that stuff over there. From my reading, al-Qaqaa was a symbolic loss to some extent, replicated in some form at dozens, if not hundreds of other places.
It could be connected, but not necessarily. Had we sent enough troops to secure that stuff in the first place, we might not be having the problems today...
