Labor
In my second Newman link of the day, Nathan's got an excellent case study of how union votes are won -- by anti-labor corporations. Go.
By the way, you're probably going to see a lot more labor posts on this site. I recently read Thomas Geoghegan's Which Side Are You On: Trying to be For Labor When It's Flat on its Back (a really phenomenal, visceral tour of the decline of Labor). True to the title, you can't read the book and stay neutral -- which is why everybody should read the book. For my part, I'm determined not to contribute to progressivism's strange indifference towards labor issues. Indeed, I'd like to push us in the opposite direction, so expect the blog to be affected by that. If any of you are well-versed in labor issues and could recommend some books or sites that could help me, I'd be grateful.

Sounds like a good read, Ezra. Having worked my way through college many years ago partially due to decent wages as a member of the Operating Engineers and Laborers, I have always been frustrated by the cultural division that has put progressives and Democrats in conflict with unions. In my neck of the woods (literally) this seemed to start with the Vietnam war protests and then became defined by loggers vs. environmentalists. In the 70's Republicans were often the party of environmentalists in Oregon due to this strain.
30 years later it seems that progressives are starting to see that this is not a good state of affairs. Let us hope that industrial unions realize that they too can gain in this relationship. It is time for serious efforts to be made to bring the abuses of Wal Mart, Home Depot and their ilk under control.

I've always been a fan of unions, but I grew up in a Teamster's household and all the jobs I've had have been union except that little break I took during the tech boom when i deserted my worker roots for the chase of big money.
Unions, like a lot of other liberal institutions, need to sell themselves again. The public has been hearing all the BS coming from the rich right wingers and they need a steady dose of liberal ideology.

Yup, another fellow raised in a union household with the union retiree voting Repug unless some 'populist' like Perot comes along.
Grad students voted for a union at my school, Columbia, and the U, 'arguing' (really: selling their power play) that although those of us who teach classes, well, teach (as in: we're responsible for those people and their grades and often the syllabus), we're really 'in training.'
Unions need to expand into jobs like those in order to survive, and there's no chance that management won't have to be dragged kicking and screaming into it, as even the most liberal U's make paternalist decisions a Ford would love.
There's been some threats from City Hall that Columbia's expansion plans won't be approved unless they learn to play nice with unions, but we'll see.

Great book, isn't it? I was raised with my mother crooning "Joe Hill" and "Solidarity Forever" at my bedside as I went to sleep each night, and walking picket lines with her as a teenager. (Actually, can I take this opportunity to apologize to Irv Hirshenbaum of the UFW for the march in the late 80s where my high-school friends and I got overly creative with the chants as we carried the grape boycott banner?)
I read WSAYO? back when it came out, and I've used it ever since as a great reference and factual support for positions I'd previously held on a knee-jerk emotional basis (Workers good! Bosses oppressive!).

I've got a copy of it somewhere on the shelves. There's a bit of melancholy in it, and if he updated it, I imagine that melancholy has only grown greater since.
