Momma said wonk you out

Maybe I'll Send Flowers

If you had sat me down six months ago and told me the Democrats were going to not only outmaneuver, but out-organize the Republicans on Social Security, I would have called you a CIA plant. If you did it today, I'd call you the Washington Post:

Administration and congressional officials said many Republican members remain afraid of taking on Social Security, and many fewer than the party had hoped are holding Social Security events this week.

Republican officials said at least 70 of the party's House members are holding town hall meetings this week, not all of them devoted specifically to Social Security, while House Democrats said they will hold more than 90 Social Security events this week.

In other news, my altar to Reid and Pelosi is coming along nicely.

Yes, it's progress, but I'd be wary of too much triumphalism here. For one thing, SS is a VERY popular program, so the Repubs were always going to be taking a huge risk in taking it on, regardless of what the Dems did. (Bush' other big triumphs have been much more popular with the voters, even when they didn't deserve to be, e.g., tax cuts, the Medicare bill, NCLB, Iraq.) Secondly, I'm with several other bloggers in wondering what the hidden agenda is here. Given Bush' history of making sudden switches when the political winds so dictate, the Dems need to remain alert. The possibility that this is mostly a smoke screen for some other egregiously bad (but more popular) Repub idea is very real. My guess is greatly increased tax-deferred retirement accounts outside of SS, which will only benefit the rich and further drain the government coffers. (And don't tell me the government will get those taxes back when the owners retire. If the Repubs are still in power when the baby boomers start retiring in droves, look for a move to cut or eliminate taxes on 401k/IRA withdrawals.)

I didn't read Ezra's post, or the Washington Post, as triumphalism - but then perhaps I'm conflating what they're saying with what I'm feeling. I'm feeling something more akin to relief; the Democrats have finally overcome their fear to stand against Bush and organized themselves to resist effectively as opposed to whining and then caving (or caving and then whining).

I don't so much care about the particular issue as the fact that it's happening: for the first time since 2001, the Democrats appear to be an effective political party at the national level. This is great news.

This blog posting is great. Your views are very true. Everyone should start thinking as you are doing.

Not much on my mind right now. Today was a complete loss. So it goes. I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen. I've basically been doing nothing , but I guess it doesn't bother me.

I haven't been up to anything. That's how it is. Not much on my mind right now. I can't be bothered with anything recently, not that it matters. It's not important.

I've just been letting everything pass me by , but so it goes. I just don't have much to say these days. Pfft. I can't be bothered with anything. More or less nothing seems worth doing. I haven't gotten much done recently, but oh well.

I've just been letting everything pass me by lately. Maybe tomorrow. Today was a complete loss, but that's how it is. Eh. Oh well.
