Momma said wonk you out

THINGS I FOUND CONVINCING TODAY.

ssb.jpg

All of your comments on why I should buy the Wii. And James Elliott's post on the same:

Ezra Klein wants to know if there is any compelling reason why he should not run out to Target and buy a Wii and a copy of Super Smash Brothers. In a universe fraught with existential angst and complex, possibly unanswerable questions, this quandary exists on its own serene little isle: There is absolutely no reason not to do this. The Nintendo Wii transcends all other video game systems; it is pure, unadulterated fun. Even my wife, who despised video games, loves our Wii. The Wii is the transcendent ideal of video game systems. It is the Alpha and the Omega, the logos, the one true thing in this world that will love you back.
So now I'm the proud owner of a Nintendo Wii with Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I already had a set of Gamecube controllers, so that's all taken care of. What other games are must-haves? Primarily in the category of party games, but also in the category of "games that will suck your life away."

Meanwhile, see that picture up there? I went to Creative Commons to search for a picture of Super Smash Brothers for this post and the search returned a picture of me playing Super Smash Brothers last weekend. That's creepy, internets. That's damn creepy.

(Image used with no one's permission at all, because Emily didn't ask me before she took a picture and uploaded it, along with a little piece of my soul, to the internets.)

"So now I'm the proud owner of a Nintendo Wii with Super Smash Brothers Brawl."

Oh thank Christ for that. I saw the screen and thought you were playing Mario Party. Now I have Smash Brothers envy. Damn region locking.

Kidult alert!

Lmao, I'm just laughing that he's still coloring eggs...

Metroid Prime Echoes (i think it's called?) without a doubt the best single player game I've played on it. Has some really great Wii controls!

Just a correction to a previous post when this subject arose. Nintendo Japan is actual over 40 percent owned by people OUTSIDE of Japan. In fact, Fidelity has part of one of its overseas portfolios invested in Nintendo, I happen to own some of that fund.

So thanks Ezra, you just contributed to my retirement account. But I'm still not buying tofu.

Super Mario Galaxy sounds fun from the amount of time my wife spends on it.

Wait for this one:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/848/848996p1.html

Rock Band is the most fun I've ever had with a video game.

I have Zelda: Twilight Princess, Super Paper Mario, Carnival Games (fun for parties), Metroid Prime: Echoes, and I will be getting Super Mario Galaxy as soon as I finish some 360 games on my list.

There are rumors they will produce an Iron Chef America game at some point.

Excessive contact with the Internet had caused it to more or less assimilate you, Ezra. That picture wanted to find you as much as you wanted to find it, because it and you are just parts of the larger Internet. Your Wii purchase is being discussed on another blog, and that post probably has six Diggs already. Items you touch, even non-electronic ones, are now in serious danger of becoming Internet-accessible.

What SDM fails to mention is that we, too, got a Wii this past weekend and that you guys should come over and have a massive tennis-off.

Super Mario Galaxy (Just a great game), WarioWare (for pure fun with others), Guitar Hero (just from what I have heard, don't own it), Legend of Zelda (only if you are into adventure type games)

Basically be wary of anything that isn't published by Nintendo themselves.

Super Mario Galaxy is a sublime game. Guitar heros is great fun although you might as well wait for Rock Band which is due in June. Rayman Raving Rabbits is underrated fun. That Wario party game is fun although we don't have it. It consists of mini mini games that take seconds to complete. Good frenetic fun.

And don't forget to play lots of Wii Tennis on Wii Sports. That is a blast against other people. Master the return serve for sheer dominance.

Super Mario Galaxy is a great single player game, the essence of what a Mario game should be. But for the specific question of party games, I highly recommend the first Rayman Raving Rabbids.

I'd also recommend Resident Evil 4 for the Wii if you are into games involving lots of guns and tentacles. And don't forget to pick up any of the gamecube games.

Mario Part Wii, or whatever. It's wicked fun at a, er, party. I grabbed the DS version of it and my GF and I have been enjoying it thoroughly...

Rayman Raving Rabbits for the Wii is a ton of fun, either solo or in a group, so definitely check it out!

"Basically be wary of anything that isn't published by Nintendo themselves."

Very true, apart from Zack & Wiki.

Happy to have been of service. Mario Party is loads of fun, and I've been enjoying Legend of Zelda as well. But really, the best game on the Wii is the one it came with: Wii Sports. Hours upon hours of fun.

I don't recommend Prince of Persia or Lego Star Wars (darn you, little nephew!).

The Wii Play is a good deal because you get a second Wii controller. Everyone loves the cow racing, from 65 to five years old.

Lego Star Wars Complete Saga is a great game as well.

Super Mario Campaign 2008 was just released and its pretty cool. You dodge sniper bullets while holding a child until you make it to your limo. The you have to run away from Right Reverend Wright while he bombards you with extremist rhetoric.
Watch out for the Anti-Jewish Merrill McPeaky and the Judas Richardson who will sap your power. Gather up superdelegates while throwing mud at your opponent. Its alot of fun!!

Rayman Raving Rabbits is much better then Rayman Raving Rabbits II. so be careful.

I'm wondering what the person in the bottom left of the picture is reading. The title looks like "New Jews, Viagra, and Obama", which I'm sure would be fascinating.

I'll echo the comments about Mario, Rayman, Wario and Metroid (Corruption, actually, Echoes was 2).

If you love you some strategery, though, you can't go wrong with Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. A fantastic game that is so difficult it will sterilize you. Wait, that's doesn't sound very fun, does it....

Datel to the rescue!

Also, I demand friend codes.

You're a good American. Buying stuff when the economy's in the tank. Ever the optimist, I'm buying stuff too.

Of the (admittedly few) Wii games I've got, I'd recommend Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime: Corruption.

As far as party games, you really should download some form Bomberman for the Virtual Console.

One more vote for Mario Galaxy--it's a beautiful game.

Also: I (and at least a few other people I know who've played it) consider Resident Evil 4 to be one of the best games of all time. I played it on GameCube, but presumably it's as good on the Wii.

The "Tanks" game on wii play is strangely compelling......

David Morris: Also: I (and at least a few other people I know who've played it) consider Resident Evil 4 to be one of the best games of all time. I played it on GameCube, but presumably it's as good on the Wii.

Its even better than that. Aside from the improvements over the GC version (all the extra missions and bonuses from the PS2 version), the wiimote is an incredibly satisfying aiming device. In a regular game, accuracy with the guns is around 90%, and that's with targeting of head, legs, arms, not just center mass. The only reason the wii version didn't get 10 ratings is that the graphics aren't quite as good as they should be.

i second super mario galaxy being both beautiful and sublime, and guitar hero iii as a delightful timewaster. it might give you carpal tunnel, though.

Super Mario Galaxy is the best single player game on the system. Raving Rabbids is twisted fun, though not too replayable.

And there is no reason not to grab House of the Dead 2 & 3 - it's just a straight-up port, but it's cheap (30 bucks) and offers hours of light-gun style zombie shooting, plus some of the best terrible dialogue you'll ever hear.

Could it be? Obama and Clinton supporters put down their differences to discuss a pressing national issue?
No in fighting? No cheap shots?
This has got to stop!

Carville says Resident Evil is a game about Bill Richardson. And the Obama camp wants to remind everyone that Hillarys' harrowing scene of dodging snipers is directly taken from the Call of Duty 3 game.

only girls, young children and two small japanese guys play Wii.

No bongs or empty beer cans? Damn, you kids are lame.

Smash Bros is great.

I'll throw in a recommendation for Endless Ocean. It's not a game, per se, it's more like an exploration toy. It's a scuba sim of sorts where you explore a rather large underwater area.

The only essential Wii title is WarioWare: Smooth Moves. I haven't found anyone who doesn't like it, young or old.

Super Mario Galaxy may be the greatest 3D platformer ever made, but whether it's the best Wii title depends on whether you like 3D platformers. I think it's fun but might actually be too conservative in its observance of the genre conventions.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is nifty, and an interesting demonstration that the Wii could be an incredible platform for shooter games if people wanted it to be.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection has Black Knight, Firepower, Pinbot, Space Shuttle and Funhouse. If you understand the sentence I just wrote, you know what to do. If not, never mind.

If you haven't already bought a second controller, you might as well buy the bundle that has a second controller plus Wii Play. It's not that great, but for the few dollars you're effectively paying for it, you might as well get it just for the pretty good Laser Hockey minigame (think Pong with Wii controllers and hyperrealistic physics).

Rayman is awesome... I agree that no. 2 isn't as good... the music mini-games are completely and utterly addictive. I can't hear "Teenager in Love" without my hands involuntarily responding.

Wii Sports, the game bundled with the console is still the best game out there. Am chagrined a bit at the offerings, which tend mostly toward the Mario-themed product extension end of the spectrum. I guess Wii's controller interface makes it harder for the EAs of the workd to code--very little legacy code left from previous Nintendo consoles, and even less that can be ported from Sony/MS ones.

Go to Wii shop channel and download Excitebike and Mario Cart 64. Best $15 you'll ever spend. Seriously, trust me.

And good on you, Ez, for paying retail.

wow, that's quite a bald spot going on there... oh wait, that's me. damn.

I ordinarily don't point this out on this blog, but I am a professional video game reviewer. And I own a Wii, to boot.

So with that in mind, I ask this of you Ezra - what kind of games do you like? I have a ton of suggestions. But they're only worthwhile if you like those types of games (I know people who hate literally every game mentioned so far - but I was able to predict they'd hate the game in question in nearly every instance).

If you enjoyed Kill Bill, or over-the-top violence mixed in general, No More Heroes is a good bet.

Resident Evil IV is an amazingly good game on the Wii. Still haven't finished it but I've logged in more hours on it than anything since I was playing the first Ninja Turtles game on Super Nintendo or whatever the hell it was.

Considering how much you know about football, you might want to learn more with the Madden NFL game for Wii (cheap shot, yeah). I don't like football much but the game is fun (you do need two nunchucks, though).

Guitar Hero III is really fun, but you might want to hold out to see if Rock Band is also amazing-- I suspect that's a better party game.
