WHAT IF?
Yes, it's fairly reprehensible that Geraldine Ferraro said "if Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position, and if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept." But in a weird way, there's much less to this comment than meets the eye. After all, Obama is not a woman, nor a white man. He's who he is. To say that if he were different, things would be different is to say nothing at all. As a white woman, maybe he would have led a military coup and established himself dictator. Who knows!? Hell, if he were a slightly less inspiring speaker, or had an off-night at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he wouldn't be in this position either. Similarly, if Hillary Clinton were a black man, it's unlikely that she would have been a national political figure for the past 15 years, as it's unlikely that she would have married another man from Arkansas, and unlikely that the country would have put an interracial, same sex couple in the White House. But so what? This is an election, not Marvel's "What If?" series.
Meanwhile, folks are forgetting that Ferraro has been trying to ruin her reputation for months now. Check out her awesome New York Times op-ed explaining that superdelegates were created to vote for Hillary Clinton for an example. I bet if she were a multi-headed alien from the plant Zblatt, she wouldn't be doing any of this.

I think you're being too kind to Ferraro now and too harsh to her old position. Counterfactuals are always tricky, but it seems that Ferarro is saying that Obama is a major candidate more because of his race than because of his skills as a campaigner and politician. And that's not true.
Whereas, the old article didn't seem so bad -- she was arguing that superdelegates were supposed to have an independent role, which is defensible, and that they should try to swing the convention for Clinton by seating the Florida and Michigan slates, which is what you'd expect a Clinton supporter to say.
BTW, the Daily Breeze headline seems really sexist. "Geraldine Ferarro lets her emotions do the talking"? What was the basis for that in the article?

PA Governor Ed Rendell: "You've got some conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate."
Geraldine Ferraro: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color), he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
I don't get it. He can't win because he's black, but he's winning because he's black?!? Sheesh. I wish the Clinton camp would get their story straight.

Here's the counterfactual "If" that matters: IF Hillary Clinton had voted against the AUMF, she would be the nominee today.

Ah, the inevitable marvel comics reference. I feel nostalgiac already.

Why are we listening to this woman anyway? I was under the impression that her issues and her husband's financial improprieties were one of the reasons why Mondale never got solid footing in 1984 and got trounced by Reagan.
This said, I've heard a lot about Clinton's "surrogate problem" and a lot of times these statements seem too coordinated to have been isolated incidents of someone just shooting off their mouth.

I'm not here to sing praiseto Geraldine Ferraro, but she is correct when she said:
"if Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position, and if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
Funny thing here is...Ezra admits as much. Instead of seeing him a white dude, try seeing Obama as a Black woman...
I wonder if this wouldn't not be heard:
"...shrill, inexperienced social climber, who slept her way to the top while she played "stand by your man"
All comments made HERE by Obamma fans.
If Obama was a SHE of any color...nobody would of heard HER. Sad, but true

Ah, but what would have happened if Obama had saved Gwen Stacey from falling off that bridge?!
Posted by: MosBen | March 11, 2008 2:28 PM
Just why was Geraldine Ferraro selected for the ticket in 1984? Was it her political experience or accomplishments? Was she a prominent senator or governor? Obviously it had nothing to do with her being a woman at a time when the Democrats were desperate to find some way to beat Reagan.

"They were, and are, expected to determine what is best for our party and best for the country."
I love this said about the super delegates. Awesome.
Posted by: asl | March 11, 2008 3:12 PM
Apparently, all it takes to become the Democratic nominee is to be a black man. That's why there have been so many black nominees.
Posted by: Royko | March 11, 2008 3:26 PM
Nothing speaks to her personal accomplishments more than this:
It worked. In 1984 I headed the party’s platform committee. We produced the longest platform in Democratic history, a document that stated the party’s principles in broad terms that neither the most liberal nor the most conservative elected officials would denounce. It generated no fights at the convention. It was a document that no one would walk away from. We lost in 1984, big time.
So, she helped write a long boring milquetoast platform that helped the party get slaughtered 49-1? Hey, where do I sign up to get an advisor with that kind of political acumen?

This is officially my favorite post of 2008 so far. Besides maybe tipping me off to the DERT mash up, which is still getting pretty decent play on my laptop.

What is this mashup you speak of? I have an interest in such things, but seem to have missed that post!

"To say that if he were different, things would be different is to say nothing at all."
A lovely sentiment that NEVER gets mentioned when folks talk about Clinton only being a senator or a presidential candidate because of her marriage.
Ah sweet double-standards.
Ferraro is right, in the sense that if he had been white, the media would have given him the "Clinton" abuse or, more likely, ignored him like Edwards.

Matt Weiner wrote: "Whereas, the old article didn't seem so bad -- she was arguing that superdelegates were supposed to have an independent role..."
Exactly. And that's just the problem. The superdelegates exist to keep we rabble in our place. Should we ever get too uppity and demand too much democracy the superdelegates are there to prevent that from happening. At the end of this election cycle if the Democratic Party doesn't dump this most anti-democratic of all rules I will give serious consideration to joining the Green Party. At least there I don’t have worry about my vote not counting because some crook from the DLC decided I shouldn’t have voted the way I did.

I do not like Obama's politics on many issues, but I believe the milestone of electing the first african american president is significant enough to vote for him in the general election if he is the nominee in spite of that. This matters, anyone who says it doesn't is not being honest. Obama's race is an asset and this country should feel excited by the prospect of what it would mean for him to be elected. That should not be the only reason to vote for him, or the most important- but it matters. This may have both good and bad parts, but I have no doubt the good far outweigh the bad. Those who are outraged at Ferraro's comments are being dishonest if they want to pretend what she said is not true, or just plain silly if they are going to pretend like these comments will make that much of a difference. There is nothing wrong with the American people being excited and energized at the prospect of breaking barriers that are long overdue to broken. We need to face the reality of that situation even if it isn't beneficial politically to do so.

Ferraro has been saying this kind of thing for a while. In 1988 she said "if Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race."

Ezra, if I were a straight woman, I'd want to have your baby.

Sadly, the "If Obama were white/a woman" thing has caught on with at least a few voters -- a good liberal co-worker of mine whose opinion I usually respect was telling me that just the other day.
The thing is, even if Ferraro's right, so what? I'm not voting for a president based on how hard life's been for them or how many obstacles they've had to overcome. It's almost as if Ferraro is saying that because it's harder for women in politics than it is for African-Americans, we can't have an African-American president until we've had a woman first. I thought the presidency was supposed to be determined by a democratic voting process, not taking turns.

What if... Obama joined the Fantastic Four? They'd be the FANTASTIC FIVE!
Always loved that issue, talk about an answer to the "what if" you could see a million miles away
Posted by: blahblah | March 12, 2008 4:07 PM
The implication of Ferraro's comments are that Obama is not qualified or entitled to his position as front runner. Nothing could be further from the truth. He came from behind to take the lead because of hard work, a well-run campaign, charisma and intellect. He has earned every vote. In many respects, he has had to work harder and be a better candidate in order to overcome the disadvantages of race. If Ferraro cannot see this truth, then she is racist.
Posted by: Alan | March 12, 2008 4:08 PM
S Brennan: The issue isn't to defend Obama, but to decry race-baiting rhetoric.
Posted by: Tony | March 13, 2008 6:33 PM
Ferraro also said in the original interview that if she had not been a woman she would never have been the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 1984. (If only she'd been a man, I say.)
She even goes hypothetical on her own ass. I think she's a confused old throwback. She needs to be taken off the tv and put out to pasture.
