OBAMA CELEBRATES THE IRANIAN NEW YEAR.
At some point during the campaign, some sly blogger almost certainly joked that an Obama White House would celebrate the Iranian New Year and release transcripts in both English and Persian. They were, as it turns out, utterly prescient.
Obama's message was released at midnight on March 20th, which meant it hit Iran at 7:30am on the morning of Nowruz. The video was released with Persian subtitles, and a Persian transcript is now up at the White House web site. An excerpt:
So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran's leaders. We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community. This process will not be advanced by threats. We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect.
You, too, have a choice. The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. You have that right -- but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, but rather through peaceful actions that demonstrate the true greatness of the Iranian people and civilization. And the measure of that greatness is not the capacity to destroy, it is your demonstrated ability to build and create.
So on the occasion of your New Year, I want you, the people and leaders of Iran, to understand the future that we seek. It's a future with renewed exchanges among our people, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce. It's a future where the old divisions are overcome, where you and all of your neighbors and the wider world can live in greater security and greater peace.
I know that this won't be reached easily. There are those who insist that we be defined by our differences. But let us remember the words that were written by the poet Saadi, so many years ago: "The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence."
There are times when it's hard to believe that this is how my country acts now. That somewhere in government, some young bureaucrat had the idea that the President should publicly honor the Iranian New Year, and that bureaucrat felt that her superiors would also think this a good idea, and, indeed, the thought went all the way to the President, who agreed that a display of engagement and goodwill was consonant with our national values and foreign policy goals. It is hard to believe that five years after we were ordering "freedom fries" in the congressional cafeteria, we're posting Persian translations at Whitehouse.gov.
I've copied the whole of the message after the fold. In English as well as Persian.
Today I want to extend my very best wishes to all who are celebrating Nowruz around the world.
This holiday is both an ancient ritual and a moment of renewal, and I hope that you enjoy this special time of year with friends and family.
In particular, I would like to speak directly to the people and leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Nowruz is just one part of your great and celebrated culture. Over many centuries your art, your music, literature and innovation have made the world a better and more beautiful place.
Here in the United States our own communities have been enhanced by the contributions of Iranian Americans. We know that you are a great civilization, and your accomplishments have earned the respect of the United States and the world.
For nearly three decades relations between our nations have been strained. But at this holiday we are reminded of the common humanity that binds us together. Indeed, you will be celebrating your New Year in much the same way that we Americans mark our holidays -- by gathering with friends and family, exchanging gifts and stories, and looking to the future with a renewed sense of hope.
Within these celebrations lies the promise of a new day, the promise of opportunity for our children, security for our families, progress for our communities, and peace between nations. Those are shared hopes, those are common dreams.
With the coming of a new season, we're reminded of this precious humanity that we all share. And we can once again call upon this spirit as we seek the promise of a new beginning.
Thank you, and Eid-eh Shoma Mobarak.

You know there's an election coming up in Iran soon?
I'm pretty sure Obama is screwing over Ahmadinejad with this stuff.

We're all Iranians now!

A very gracious message. No threats, no poorly hidden digs.
What a contrast with the Boy King.
It will be interesting to see if the Iranian media is permitted to broadcast the video with the persian subtitles.
My guess is that if the government supresses the video, it will go viral within the country, counterproductive to the Iran government's insecurity.

you gotta love him!

It's a bit of a face lift certainly, but, as always, we'll wait and see what comes of it ...
Still, this video doesn't shock me as much as the fact that I think, of course, that's what he and his people would do. It's NOT shocking in context. It's like, the LEAST he can do, in fact.
Contrast this with less than three years ago when it seemed like we were barely keeping a lid on a proxy war w/ them on top of the civil war in Iraq.

Also, from Faulkner and Lincoln and MLK to Kennedy and Yeats and now to a medieval Persian poet ...
As a former student of literature, I am pleased by his appreciation for the art and its ability to communicate truths across all spectrums.

The administration has changed but Microsoft is the same. I am trying to surf the web with internet explorer (borrowed computer) and the Farsi translation is blank except for punctuation marks.
Obama is open to Iran but internet explorer and/or Vista is not.

lol Ezra the Farsi font makes no sense at all. Anyway, my parents will appreciate the translation.

Communication is the key to stopping the demonization of each other. Maybe this will help both countries take the first toddling steps to realizing that each other is not the Great Satan.

Persian,
I think Ezra has a Mac like I do. Though the latest Safari browser supports Arabic and Farsi script, the embedded PDF reader does not, and the White House posted the transcript in PDF format. (The same problem exists with the Mac version of MS Word, which sucks, because I read Arabic.)
I don't think Iranians will have much trouble reading it though, since there are practically no Macs over there.
Posted by: Serx | March 20, 2009 7:49 AM
That said, it makes no sense that they didn't put the Persian subtitles in the original (Youtube) version of the video, just in the downloadable MP4.
Posted by: Serx | March 20, 2009 7:52 AM
In both the white house pdf and the transcript you posted, none of the persian letters are connected making it really difficult to read. Great idea though

Wonderful, wonderful.

A great gesture by our cultural standards.
However, I don't believe it will be received in the spirit in which is was given. Iran will perceive weakness in the US. By their cultural standards, they would only do this if they were, indeed, weak and seeking appeasment.
Part of being in international leader is understanding how your message will be received in other cultures.
Posted by: El Viajero | March 20, 2009 8:51 AM
Iran will perceive weakness in the US.
Yeah because our total economic collapse, nobody noticed that or anything.
Posted by: twig | March 20, 2009 9:33 AM
yes, ElV, after all, who can understand those wily Orientals? /snark
Unless they KNOW how're we're thinking. But then, should be have KNOWN that they KNOW?
Save your sniping at Obama for someone who cares. The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on. Your comments are particularly rich given that they're coming from you, who was a mindless supporter of the Bush administration whose Iran policies failed. I think that Obama's judgment is a bit better than yours on this one. Your opinions on this matter are pretty much worthless-- the blatherings of a guy whose supported an ideology of failure.
Posted by: Tyro | March 20, 2009 9:38 AM
Do you mean the France that empowered the genocide in Rwanda and backstabbed Colin Powell's efforts at the United Nations to hold of W's war? I'm down with the freedom fries myself -- two wrongs don't make no right.
By the way, the difference in our Darfur policy to date has been...what? Oh well, "never again" has never been too high on either party's platform unless it means Israel.

Iran is stalling us to complete their nukular program just as North Korea did and this new move by Obama is helping them do so.
Once they have nulkular capabilities, it's done. You can't put the shit back in the cow.
Posted by: El Viajero | March 20, 2009 12:39 PM
From Obama's speech:
"This process will not be advanced by threats"
Mr President, Who has been making threats? Iran or the US? 'Regime change' and 'Axis of evil' were not coined by Iranians. "All options are on the table" would you mind enlightening us how often that has been used when negotiation talk has come up?
" It's a future with renewed exchanges among our people, and greater opportunities for partnership and commerce."
Renewed exchange? commerce? Mr Obama, you have just signed another year of sanctions against the Iranians! I don't want to accuse you of insincereity but what you make of this yourself?
"You have that right -- but it comes with real responsibilities, and that place cannot be reached through terror or arms, "
Mr president, have you looked yourself in the mirror lately? Quick history lesson, which two countries have violated more internatioal laws more than all UN memembers combined? the answer, of course, is the United States of America and your ally Israel. Mr president, ask yourself this very simple question: how many people were killed by Iranians in the 21st century and how many people were killed by the United States? how many people were brutally murdered by the genocidal regime of Israel?
"The United States wants the Islamic Republic of Iran to take its rightful place in the community of nations. "
They aleardy do Mr President thank you very much. If my community of nations you mean US + Israel, then I'd have to say, we'd rather not be part of that "community."
"The children of Adam are limbs to each other, having been created of one essence."
Mr President unfortunately we don't believe you actually meant what you said. Your country has slaughtered 1.5 million Iraqis since 2003. The value of life
is very conditional in the American mindset.
Mr president as an Iranian citizen, I'd have to say thanks but no thanks.

Bush did the same thing in 2008. You must have missed that.

An imperialist president feining sincerity. At least Bush was honest about his criminal agenda.
Looking back at our history, we are better off NOT having any relationship whatsoever with the Unites States.
As Sohrab indicated, we are part of international community Mr Obama. Thanks very much for your concern but we couldn't be bothered with your disingenuous overture.
Once and imperialist always an imperialist - republican or democrats.

Ouch!!! Ezra has been most definitely punked by Mark Hemingway.
Can you get up a quick post on the DVDs that were given to Gordon Brown that aren't usable in the UK? How about the Russian "reset" button? Or the State Department that couldn't spell the Brazilian president's name correctly?
To quote Klein: "There are times when it's hard to believe that this is how my country acts now"
I couldn't agree more

When Bush did it last year, it apparently didn't count. (Because of his aggressive imperialist invasion of Iran?)
But, I'm sure the executed gays in Iran appreciate the sentiment.
Layers of rich, velvety nuance.

JimPortlandOR,
You wrote: "A very gracious message. No threats, no poorly hidden digs. What a contrast with the Boy King."
Pray, do tell, where are the threats and poorly hidden digs in the following?
Text of President Bush's Message on Nowruz [19 March 2008, VOA News]
I send greetings to those celebrating Nowruz.
For the millions of people who trace their heritage to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Pakistan, India, and Central Asia, Nowruz is a time to celebrate the New Year with the arrival of spring. This cherished and ancient festival brings together family and friends to reflect on what has come before and celebrate a season of new beginnings.
Our country is proud to be a land where individuals from many different cultures can pass their traditions on to future generations. The diversity of America brings joy to our citizens and strengthens our Nation during Nowruz and throughout the year.
Laura and I send our best wishes to all those celebrating Nowruz, both here in the United States and abroad. May the year ahead be filled with peace and many blessings.

Worship of all things Obama by "journalists" like Mr. Klein is embarassing. Don't they see how ridiculous they look to an objective observer? Do they just write for their left wing crowd or do they just figure everyone will forget when they get caught?
Next Mr. Klein will be heralding how President Obama was brilliantly motivating the disabled last night by mocking the Special Olympics and joking about a "water head."
Posted by: Brian | March 20, 2009 3:14 PM
This is a perfect example of the sappy, emotional, romantic, and factually-challenged drivel that now passes for liberal commentary. Mr. Klein is often referred to as a "wunderkind" of new media; it appears here that he is simply just a kid with a blog, unencumbered by professional journalistic tedium like fact checking and intellectual curiosity. Time to grow up, Ezra, and expand your mind to the point where you can imagine that the last president could have done something like this, and that every example of soft diplomacy Mr. Obama practices is not some radical diversion from completely failed policies before him.

It was very hard to believe that George Bush meant any of the things he said like this, because out of the other side of his mouth were coming very strong insinuations that anyone who wasn't on board with our Iraq plans and a possible war with Iran was our enemy. Did I just imagine the whole "axis of evil" thing, or what? You line up someone's words with their long-standing policies and see if they match up.
I don't blame anyone in Iran for not trusting that Obama means what he says, either--I think it's great that he's reaching out with words, but until the US policy changes, it doesn't mean much.
Which isn't to say that I am not really happy to see the US president quoting poetry instead of planning a war. I just hope Obama will change America's foreign policy and way of interacting with the rest of the world (getting off our high horse, yanno? would be nice). But I wonder if I'm too optimistic.

Does anyone doubt that little Ezra is furiously trying the develop some crucial, face-saving distinction between the Obama and Bush messages so that he claim that he knew of GW's all along but really found some magical, qualitative difference between the two. Don't you know his journolist post reads something like:
"Come on - think, help me out here. If I can't figure out a way to not look like such a fool I'm outing all your posts to Mickey Kaus."

Conquer the real estate, extract everything of value, leave, let the remainder rot in place. So has it ever been - including Norsemen and Irish.
"Find out who they are.
Kill them all.
Kill their wives.
Kill their children.
Kill their parents.
Kill their friends.
Kill their neighbors.
Kill their animals.
Salt the earth where they lived.
Mount their heads on pikes on the steps of the Capitol."

Ayatollah Khamenei calls on Obama's bullshit:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7956504.stm
So in essance Obama's foreign policy so far has been reduced to smooth talking bullshit. First with Russia (he thought that he can persuade Putin of 145 IQ to give up support in exchnage of hot air) and now Ayatollah Khamenei - the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Obama is a joke.
In his speech he congratulates Iranian leaders on the occasion of Nowrouz and accusing them of terrorism.
Well guess schleprock, the bullshit might have helped you get elected but with respect to foreign relation you need a concrete policy not bullshiting.

I just watched the video. It is a little frightening to think that Obama and his expert advisors sit around and conclude this is the path to follow. Patronizing and condescending to the people of Iran and no doubt patheticaly amusing to their leadership. They have to be thinking that they can play this rube and that they can do anything that they want - they only need to fear Israel.
Giving Obama the benefit of the doubt, the only rational explanation for the video is that it was designed entirely for Obama's fawning domestic supporters, so people like Ezra Klein and Andrew Sullivan can drool over it and him.
I hope four years pass quickly and Obama does not make any mistakes that cost a large number of innocent lives.
