Roughly 2/3rds of Americans support "reform." Half have consistently supported single payer in polls. Even the most craven politicians know which way the wind is blowing.

I tend to agree that in terms of politics, the Obama team has made smart moves to discourage an organized opposition... but the idea that we're getting good reforms, or the right reform as a result is debatable, at best. We don't see a lot of opposition, in part, because no one's seen anything to oppose: Obama's gathered all sorts of support (or at least nice words agreeing to "do something"), but no real indication of what the actual reform is, or how it will be done. That's not just a devil in the details... it's well, the actual shape of an actual proposal.

Which is to say, and his is where we're more like 1993-4 than not, is that we (you) think the opposition has been stymied... but really, the proposal will define its opposition. Some will oppose whatever public option is in it (if any... and there will be another outcry if there's not); some will oppose even the mildest suggestion of reforms or reductions in Medicare reimbursements; somebody will oppose subsidies for poor people (and anything that broadens Medicaid)... and on and on. And that's before we get to paying for it. The real question is... can opposition to some pieces amount to a sufficient opposition to doing anything. History, really, says yes it can.

What concerns me is that in the end, Obama's worked very hard and very visibly to build a coalition in support of air... or ponies and candy; it all sounds very good in mass abstractions... but are people on board for actual substantive change that is aimed at specific actions, specific goals and actual upheaval? I'm not convinced. And if the ultimate plan amounts to ponies and candy... then we're not getting any kind of useful reform.

Yet with so much wind behind the back of substantive health reform, we may not see any substantive results. A health care reform bill passed does not necessarily mean successful health reform.
