A NEW NORMAL.
Towards the end of the 1967 movie "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," Dr. John Wane Prentice, played by Sydney Poitier, sits down with his fiance's white father, played by Spencer Tracy. "Have you given any thought to the problems your children will have?" Tracy asks. "Yes, and they'll have some...[But] Joey feels that all of our children will be President of the United States," replies Poitier. "How do you feel about that?" asks Tracy, looking skeptically at the black man in front of him. "I'd settle for Secretary of State," Poitier laughs.
Written in the late-1960s, the exchange was, indeed, laughable. The Civil Rights Act had been passed three years prior. Two years before, the Watts riots had broken out, killing 35. Martin Luther King Jr. would be assassinated a year later. But here we are, almost exactly 40 years after theatergoers heard that exchange. The last two Secretaries of State were African-American and, as of tonight, the next president may well be a black man. John Prentice's children would probably still be in their late-30s. They could still grow up to be cabinet officials or even presidents, but they would not necessarily be trailblazers.
Obama's speech tonight was powerful, but then, most all of his speeches are. This address stood out less than I expected. It took me an hour to realize how extraordinary that was. I had just watched an African-American capture the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America, and it felt...normal. Almost predictable. 50 years ago, African Americans often couldn't vote, and dozens died in the fight to ensure them the franchise. African-Americans couldn't use the same water fountains or rest rooms as white Americans. Black children often couldn't attend the same schools as white children. Employers could discriminate based on race. 50 years ago, African Americans occupied, in effect, a second, and lesser, country. Today, an African-American man may well become the president of the whole country, and it feels almost normal.
It was, to be sure, not entirely unpredicted. On March 31st, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. preached his final Sunday sermon. "We shall overcome," he said, "because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Four days later, he was murdered. But 40 years later, his dream is more alive than he could have ever imagined. Not only might a black man be president, but at times, many forget to even be surprised by it.

Yep that's right,
Barak has been getting his ass kicked since March and the Democratic elite keeps scoring their cards for the guy that's on the canvas.

Congrats to Obama on his historic win. I am happy but at the same time a bit disappointed that it took a "post-racial" high concept campaign for the first non-white guy to win the nomination. I would have found the out come more special had it happened in 1988.
Posted by: rainbow coalition | June 4, 2008 12:46 AM
Give it up, S Brennan. The fight's over--it went to the last round, but it's finally over--and Clinton lost. Obama won the most elections, the most delegates (pledged and super), and the popular vote. He is now the presumptive democratic nominee. So let's focus on the task ahead of us and go beat John McCain in November.
Posted by: Korha | June 4, 2008 12:59 AM
Shit dude, I was trying to figure out why I feel, so, ah, different tonight.
It happened. It would have happened in a different way if Hillary was the nominee, and it would have been equally awesome. But what we have is what we have, and damn am I feeling good about it.
You made me tear up, and that is not something I have done in a long time when thinking about the history of my country and the potential, nay, promises it holds...eventually. It's nice to see something fundamentally earth-shattering (in a good way) once in a while.
And a big middle finger to those who disregard this moment in any way. It's huge, and thank goodness I'm around to witness it (and you are too). The arc of history, indeed.
Posted by: abject funk | June 4, 2008 1:07 AM
Also, I think it's really bad to make the reply that S Brennan did to this post.
The fact is-- and there should be no dissent from Clinton supporters on this-- that what Barack Obama has been able to do, considering his race, his background, his name, his amount of senatorial experience, and who he was up against, is nothing short of amazing.
If Clinton supporters want to go on the Clinton thread next to this one and make arguments as to why she needs to stay in the race and fight for the superdelegates, fine. I don't have any problem with that.
But don't soil a thread about this amazing historical moment with petty talk about the primary process. This is not the time and this is not the place.

No offense to Ezra and other young people, but you can not know how important this really is. It is normal to you because your experience is limited and you grew up in a different time.
For those of use who actually experienced the last 40 years Obama winning the presidency will be monumental.
Posted by: boomer | June 4, 2008 1:15 AM
Well said, and eloquently too, Ezra.
This is historic for Americans (especially those old enough to see the contrasts within their own lifespan), but consider:
Obama may have done more for a positive view of America and Americans by citizens of other lands than any domestic or foreign action we have taken since the Marshall Plan.
So, doubly historic and deservedly so.

not meaning to detract from the magnitude of the above comments, but would like to say, the photograph for this thread, of barack obama, is a beautiful one.
that man just does not take a bad picture....and has a delightful and endearing smile!
and i just have to say that michelle obama looked radiant and exquisite in purple.
(old tv set, pretty sure it was purple.)
they are two beauties!
it was a singular moment to see them on the stage together before his address.
what must this evening have been like for them?
if it was this remarkable for us, i wonder what it was like for them.
dreamy.

Obama has huge potential but his election is merely the beginning. More important than any action since the Marshall Plan is absurd wankery.

Another Bogus meme.
S. Brennan says Obama's been getting his ass kicked since March. Yep. Hillary has beaten him by all of 4 points: FOUR.
Obama won Oregon by 20, Montana by 17, and NC by 15 -- three very different states. The meme that the Dems have had buyers remorse and are repudiating Obama is a Clintonista favorite, but, like lots of their claims, it turns out to be complete BS.
Obama has won fair and square. And even when you count all popular votes from MI and credit Obama with even one-half the Uncommitteds, he wins Hillary's favorite metric: the popular vote.

I also hear he is black so that is good too.

Excellent quote you've chosen from Dr. King, and actually somewhat more appropriate than you might realize: According to his Facebook page, that quote, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice", is Sen. Obama's favorite quote.
For the record, not that anyone cares, but I think my favorite quote is also apropos:
"Fundamentally, I believe history teaches us a categorical lesson: that once people are determined to become free, then nothing can stop them from reaching their goal." -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu
Posted by: Mark Kawakami | June 4, 2008 7:11 AM
Why is Obama simply "Black"? He descends from Kenya, England and Ireland.
another quote from MLK Jr.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
We need to focus on what this nation needs to be doing to rebuild.

What's even more inspirational to me is the way he's won--really, by appealing to the better angels of our nature. On issue after issue, from the gas tax to his foreign policy, he's taken political risks that are always in the direction of betting his campaign on the intelligence, seriousness, and fundamental decency of the American people.
It makes me think of what Rep. Murtha said about Iraq: "the American people are way ahead of us on this." Obama has really taken a leap of faith that this is true, campaigned on the premise that the beltway pundits' characterization of the people who eat at Applebee's is wrong.
It'll be interesting to see if he can continue to cut through the filter in the general election. I believe he will be able to, though he will have a harder time because the media are much more infatuated with McCain than with Obama.

I just wish that James Baldwin, whose writing did more to enlighten me regarding the African-American experience than anyhitng else, were her to see this and to use his eolquent commentary to both celebrate this moment and to put it into perspective.
Posted by: brewmn | June 4, 2008 10:16 AM
It was an amazing speech, nothing compared to his speech on race. It certainly gave me more hope though and proves to some detractors here in Europe who believe that Americans would never support a black man. Well done everyone.

More important than any action since the Marshall Plan is absurd wankery.
Not so much. For those outside looking in, the choice of a president -- or even a presidential nominee -- is a lens that brings into focus the characteristics of a nation. And those choices, which are made with relatively little concern for the world's reaction, are perhaps more significant than the ones explicitly made on the global stage.
George Bush's election didn't mean that the US was a different nation in early 2001 from what it was in late 2000, but it certainly looked different to people abroad.
The same will apply if Obama wins. That's not to say that the decision should be made based upon that reaction: it's a second-order effect, in that whether Obama or McCain takes office in January will serve as a shorthand for what the US will look like to the rest of the world.

Posted by: jacqueline | June 4, 2008 10:58 AM
I'll second brewmn's comment regarding James Baldwin. I wish he were alive to see this day.
Baldwin was always admirably unimpressed by himself and by his own skin. Like the Obamas, now that I think of it. "Blackness and whiteness do not matter," he maintained, "and to believe that they do is to acquiesce in your own destruction."
If nothing else this primary proved Baldwin right. So will the general election. Like Ferraro and Clinton, the Republican base is going to self-destruct. As for those most disgruntled and vocal supporters of Hillary Clinton, I have some more words from Baldwin: "One of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal with pain."
So deal with it. Please. And then let's join hands and move on. We have many, many more miles to go. Peace.

Er, he hasn't actually won the general election yet. Let's not get carried away here. All that's been proved so far is that a) a lot of registered Democrats and b) the voters of Illinois are willing to support a black man.

europe is a myopic, hypocritical, busted flush. it takes an empty position of moral superiority over the US out of envy and spite. europe is a racist, backward redneck dump by comparison. the US was, is and always will be far greater, progressive and dynamic than europe.
only india stands a chance of matching the US for democratic idealism and global power - and that prospect is many decades away. forget europe and bank on india as your next best friend from now on. the two huge, pluralist democracies are the best hopes for mankind.

Thanks, Ezra.
I was born in 1959. I remember when I was about nine I saw a black couple driving a Cadillac. It seemed wrong to me, but I was just old enough and reflective enough so that I caught myself and saw the green bud of racism starting to sprout.
Now, many years later, I watched both the BHO and HRC speeches, and I was only worrying that HRC wasn't conceding, and hoping that BHO could keep it up against McCain going forward. It took Ezra's post to remind me just how historic the moment is.
Now is a moment to savor, as it would have been in a different way had HRC won.
Racism is not a terminal disease.

No offense to Ezra and other young people, but you can not know how important this really is. It is normal to you because your experience is limited and you grew up in a different time.
For those of use who actually experienced the last 40 years Obama winning the presidency will be monumental.x0928

By the way, I usually buy brand watches and handbags on the internet, but none of them are high quality. One of my friends said that these items sold on the internet are just imitations of the real ones. So, where can i get a real Chanel handbag or some high quality Swiss replica watches like these ?
