SEBELIUS WATCH.
Over at the Huffington Post, Sam Stein writes a long overdue profile of Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius, focusing particularly on moments where she's tangled directly with the Bush administration. Sebelius's ability to translate progressivism into a governing philosophy that wins in Kansas seems like a tremendous achievement, but there's no doubt that her lackluster response to Bush's State of the Union dimmed her star. Even so, what shines through in Stein's profile is that Sebelius has been a damn good governor, and it's been, in large part, that very competence that's allowed her to flip the state's moderate Republicans to the Democratic Party and win election after election. That should count for something.

Kathleen Sebelius has been and will be my favorite for VP. she is exactly what Gore was to Bill Clinton and the only drawback is the vindictiveness of those who want a certain person to be the first female President and won't allow anyone else anywhere near there.
I hate it but I think that may end up being her downfall. I hope she can ramp up her national profile in the next few weeks so that people get to know her.

I've long been very impressed by her. I can't help but worry about taking someone who is so damn good at governing and giving them a job that involves basically none of it.

Interesting to note that the only negatives cited are two that Obama has explicitly said he will not consider in choosing his running mate -- foreign policy or military background or vague "state winning" criteria.
My only concerns are that many Hillary supporters may be insulted by the notion that they are being thrown a "token" woman (any girl will do, right?) and that the ticket may be a bit *too* much "change" in one year. Otherwise I like her a lot.

To copy something I posted at Yglesias' site (but that I think is relevant here):
"She's apparently been a hugely hard-working and competent executive, and having somebody with that sort of experience as a close adviser can help complement Obama's strengths and help the Obama administration operate more effectively."
So of course she won't directly govern, but I think that her experience can help Obama govern better. Obama's a savvy guy, so I'm not too worried about him doing well, but he is lacking in executive experience, so having somebody like Sibelius close at hand would (IMHO) be valuable.

But, she's the daughter of a Governor. No more dynasties! No more women who make it in politics on the "coattails" of powerful male politician!
Obama's supporters would be offended.

She is weak on foreign policy, and being Governor of a small rural state is not exactly going to be accepted as true preparation for the national stage. Bill Clinton was the senior governor in America in 1992 but his qualifications were still questioned in the general election. Ross Perot got in quite a few good diggs about it. Her response to the state of the union was weak and I doubt she is truly ready for primetime. Fair or not she will be burdened as having been chosen for her gender and she will be compared at every turn to Hillary Clinton. That is not a storyline the Obama campaign needs, especially considering that Clinton is the a much better debater and campaigner. Selibus' will be expected to outshine Hillary or she will seem weak and there is nothing out there to suggest she could do that. Failing to carry her own state will make her look weak as well. Obama will look like her was too worried about a stronger choice making him look weak and unprepared and will therefore also look weak if he chooses her.

The HuffPo piece mentions her dad -- "The daughter of the former governor of Ohio" -- but he's not just a governor of Ohio, he's the still very popular Gov. John J. Gilligan. This name still means something in Ohio, and this connection would serve an Obama-Sebelius ticket well there.
I don't think this connection should be underestimated.
