AFTERNOON INTERLUDE: IS SOCIAL DEMOCRACY A-COMING?
This isn't that much of an interlude, but I moderated a panel at Netroots Nation bringing together the Nation's Chris Hayes, online organizer extraordinaire Ben Brandzel, and unsettlingly charismatic social scientist-type Elisabeth Jacobs for a discussion on what the chances are for a real social democratic moment, and what impediments stand in the way. The panel actually turned out to be pretty interesting (Jacobs' research on New Deal-era ideological polling was particularly useful), and folks with a bit of time on their hands should give it a look:

There's a reason we're known as *social* scientists, Ezra. It's physical science geeks that best fit the nerd and pocket-protector stereotype :)

How can you say that we are not already a social democracy? You social democrats win every war and yet continue to whine, this is not to say that you should not ask for more you should but you should acknowledge that you have been on a long win steak. Except for the republican congress with Clinton as President that is the last 6 years of Clinton each administration since FDR has been more social democrat. Bush expanded Medicare expanded agricultural subsidies, expanded the federal role in schooling ect. Even Reagan and the congress that he worked with was more socially democrat than carter and his congress. People ignore the power of congress. So stop whining and celebrate your great successes.

"Social Democracy" is a nice word for it and one that the left hopes will be accepted. It's the latest of terms for the same old rejected philosophy.
I have noticed that the left changes terms often both for the philosophy and the name of their movements. Each and every time the populous begins to catch on as to who they are, they come up with a needed pseudonym that implies they are something different. Socialists and socialism were dumped for "liberals". Now that 'liberals' has become a dirty word, the need brought them to the term "Progressives". Sounds great....like you're getting somewhere. And instead of communism, it's now a softer term for the welfare state called "Social Democracy".
