MCCAIN AND DHL.
The Ohio Democrats just put out a pretty brutal video dramatizing McCain's connections to the closing of the DHL plant, and the handsome profits his adviser Rick Davis made from the deal:
I don't know if the Ohio Democratic Party is running this particular ad, but something like it is surely going to hit the Buckeye state before this race is over.

That's a lot of dense text for a negative campaign ad. I was trying to pay attention but, from the ad I really couldn't tell what it was that McCain supposedly did.
The Ohio Democrats really need to digest this a little bit more for people. Add a narrator. Something. This is a very ineffective ad as it stands.

The Plain Dealer and Dayton Daily News have both run articles on it. I think this sort of thing has traction in a state that's had such job losses for so long.

What do they mean lobbying for foreign ownership. Isn't that a private matter?

Be careful what you wish for. Obama and Maytag in Illinois have something worse. It's always tiresome when the democratic party starts pushing this stuff.

Hold on a second. What did McCain & Co do? Allow a german company to buy DHL? The fact that DHL is now owned by the German Postal service has nothing to do with the UPS/DHL deal. DHL's facility in Wilmington wasn't as efficient as its competitors' air hubs, hence the deal to have UPS handle domestic air freight.
If you think that greedy american capitalists would have made a drastically different decision than the greedy german capitalists, you're sorely mistaken. Besides, many of the people making the decision were probably american executives of DHL's US operations.
Keep in mind that while many jobs will be lost in Wilmington, a bunch of jobs will probably be created in Louisville (or wherever UPS's hub is). Admittedly, fewer jobs, because the joint UPS/DHL operation will be more efficient, due to economies of scale and because UPS's operation is more automated and already more efficient. But, more efficiency (i.e. higher productivity overall) is a good thing at a macro-economic level.

neils, the difference is that no matter what happened in Illinois, Obama will win the state.
McCain and his lobbyist employees losing jobs in Ohio may make a difference in that state.
And let's not talk about Airbus.

My God he says "straight talk" a lot. Seems to me if you constantly harp on what a straight talker you are, you probably aren't. And yet all he had to do was call his bus the "Straight Talk Express" and everyone in the press fell in love with him. Stupid.

If you read the plain dealer article, you'll see that there was an attempt to kill the deal by a bill that would not permit foreigners to carry military stuff. McCain was instrumental in preventing that restriction, which apparently would have been a dealbreaker.
