Sarah Palin had a tanning bed installed in the Alaska governor's mansion? Seriously? That's like knocking the eight ball into the pocket on the break. Isn't there some CNN rulebook whereby that ends the election right now?

i believe she is about to give her awaited speech this morning in a horse stable.
Mmm, Palin naked in a tanning bed, more right-wing wanking fantasy material.
Wingnutters ADORE any woman who is young-ish, spews right-wing venom dressed up as (exceedingly lame) comedy, and is within spitting distance of "attractive." Palin is basically another manifestation of the Coulter, Malkin, Ingraham, etc. phenomenon.
Why are the networks giving Palin and McCain basically an open mike this morning? I know they will say something about the financial crisis but as we saw with McCain's speech, this is really just a way to get airtime...
Ladies and gentlemen there is a grave financial crisis and Barack Obama wants to teach your kindergarteners about sex. America's major banks are in trouble and Obama called Sarah Palin a pig....
I'm guessing the good citizens of Alaska paid for it too? Or was it fed money?
This won't phase her nutjob fans in the least. In fact they will be along any minute now to defend her right to indoor tanning and of course point out how sexist we all are for even mentioning it.
In the arctic where there are months with very little sunlight, people suffer from SAD, low energy, and illnesses due to lack of light. I don't know about tanning beds but it's possible it's not as ridiculous as it sounds.
There are so many bogus claims against Palin that we're missing the big ones. She didn't try to ban any books or push her religious beliefs while governor. She didn't say she wanted to bomb Russia. But there are real things to complain about... like she said that Georgia did not in any way provoke Russia, which shows she doesn't know the basic facts about what happened (since Georgia invaded South Ossetia).
One would hope the CNN rulebook also would include that refusing to do an interview with a major news organization would also be an election ender. If ANY press or media outlet had any self-respect they would stop covering the McCain campaign all together until she gives them a solid interview.
Um, this is such a double standard. Are you not aware that Biden is known as the senator from MBNA? Or the current legal problems of his undisplayed son, Hunter?
If she were a Democrat, yes. But in this case it's only a matter of time before we hear that she needed that tanning bed to fight back against Seasonal Affective Disorder and if you have something to say about that, well then, I don't know what you have against people with mental illness but YOU are the one with the problem, not brave Sarah not-so-Palin.
In the arctic where there are months with very little sunlight, people suffer from SAD, low energy, and illnesses due to lack of light. I don't know about tanning beds but it's possible it's not as ridiculous as it sounds.
Which would be relevant if they lived in the Arctic, but they don't. But yeah, it's amazing that everyone in Alaska hasn't committed suicide, either that or they all have personal tanning beds.
On a related note, after the bullshit posted above, can the rest of you please stop giving this PUMA concern troll the benefit of the doubt?
Yappa: A tanning bed in no way replaces SAD lights, which are available for around $100 and are meant to be used in certain ways at certain times during the day.
And secondly, no responsible physician would recommend a tanning bed for a patient suffering from SAD. Tanning beds are cancer enhancers, and it's irresponsible for a woman with children and teens to have one in the house. That's like giving them a packet of cigarettes every day.
From every report I have read regarding the good Governor from the great state of Alaska, it is clear that her appearance plays a significant role in her appeal. In part, her popularity among men at home hinges on it, that and straight cash payments.
She is a women, and though not all women have vanity issues, there is nothing wrong with looking good!
Though when it is revealed this is at the taxpayers expense, then we're talking a whole new ballgame.
ok, even if you stipulate that she suffers from SAD (which is about as likely as the idea that mccain can't use a computer because he was a POW) the question still remains - who paid for the bed? was it a "gift"? is it going to turn out that palin had some "free" remodeling done on her home too? given her past connections with ted stevens it wouldn't be surprising if she'd learned a few ways to make the system work for her.
Skin cancer is caused, overwhelmingly, by over-exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun and from tanning beds. It is largely preventable. In fact, 95percent of skin cancers are preventable if we properly protect ourselves from UV rays. Eighty percent of one’s lifetime sun damage occurs before age 18. It is imperative that we instill sun safety behavior among our children at an early age and thus incorporate sun safety education in our public educational system.
I have SAD and I have a light which is sitting on my desk at work. I do WORK while the light is on - can't see how anyone can get work done in a tanning bed.
When I researched lights for SAD I *never* heard any mention of tanning beds being a good therapy. This is just stupid BS - can't even call it spin
So she has SAD, does she? So you're saying that this ticket is composed of
-an old man who underwent a traumatic war experience, has a reputation for anger management problems, has had skin cancer on several occasions and who stands a significant chance of dying before his first term is over, and
-a depressive case who has to have ready access to a tanning bed or else she cannot do her job
In the arctic where there are months with very little sunlight, people suffer from SAD, low energy, and illnesses due to lack of light. I don't know about tanning beds but it's possible it's not as ridiculous as it sounds.
My friends who worked in Helsinki used full-spectrum lightboxes by their desks during winter. They're not fucking tanning beds, and anyone who says that a tanning bed is 'light therapy' thinks you're fucking stupid.
I'll defend Palin on this one - damn near every Alaskan woman I know uses tanning beds in the winter. Is that sexist? A lot of the men do, too. Granted, I live around 350 miles north of Wasilla, so we get considerably less sunlight, but it seems to me like a fair use of taxpayer dollars. Especially since the governor is in fact entitled to a mansion owned by the state.
Can we get back to the substantial issues, like her atrocious management style and her complete lack of qualifications for the office she seeks?
She should have just gone with a "spray on" tan, like respectable politicians and celebrities.
That would actually be elitist, because salon spray-ons are expensive and skin-preserving.
I'm not joking-- plenty of not-wealthy people buy them, if they have enough room at home. From a socioeconomic-class perspective, think of a tanning bed as being the new aboveground pool, which was the new lawn tractor, which was the new carport. It's one of those medium-sized luxuries that make a sort of economic sense for people who would spend more money going to a salon bed anyway.
Dudes, I'm pretty sure that the guy who brought up SAD was just being snarky.
We can whip this up to a serious issue if taxpayers bought the bed; otherwise it's the same kind of substanceless attack that we're getting out of Republicans, and that's starting to backfire on THEM.
I read that, about the tanning bed -- and despite being an all-out opponent of all things Republican, I had no reaction to it whatsoever. Zilch. So she got a tanning bed installed. Why should that be a game-stopper? Why should it even matter at all, considering what far more important reasons to loathe Palin one could raise? Seriously, this is just petty.
How long until Palin says she may not know much about the Shiites but she has experience with the Sunnis from the tanning bed in her Governor's mansion?

I think it would be rather sexist to discuss "tanning" in regard to a female candidate.

Didn't she continue to live at her own home and not in the Gov's mansion? Is she tanning while "on the job"?

he's had skin cancer 30 times, she has a tanning bed. they ARE soulmates!

I must disclose that I am a serial sexist (jk).

Well she can't very well get an all-over, lineless tan by laying by the pool, now, can she?
Posted by: kth | September 15, 2008 12:26 PM
A tanning bad, eh? She should have just gone with a "spray on" tan, like respectable politicians and celebrities.
Why in the world would this "end the election" now? People vote on the volatile tanning bed issue?
