Momma said wonk you out

ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS.

Obama raised $150 million in September, bringing his total haul during the campaign to over $600 million. Average donation last month? $86. And it's worth saying that this does more than simply pump Obama's campaign full of money (and for that matter, dissuade Republican donors of putting money into a cause as unlikely as McCain). In normal years, the DNC has to split its funds between downticket races, party building, and supporting the presidential candidate. This year, as you've heard, the RNC is the only institution keeping McCain viable. But for once, the DNC is freed from such presidential level responsibility, which is why you're hearing rumblings that they're going to inject $20 million -- $20 million! -- in state legislature races meant to construct the majorities needed to take control of congressional redistricting in 2010. Obama having a lot of money, in other words, also means the rest of the party has a lot of money, and can spend it on things that are not Obama. They can spend it on building a majority.

You know, I sort of feel like there was a recent American Prospect cover story on rather this exact topic...

The roadblock he's booked 8P on the 29th is freaking insane.

And it's like he's running a master clinic on campaigning. There were clues this month he had a massive haul, given the ubiquity of his advertising in normal channels, his expanding ground investment, and all the weird 'new media' places his ads were popping up.

But $150 million and the first we heard of it was leaks a few days ago of $100 million. Simply amazing how they kept it under wraps. And that really helped them maximize this haul.

This is precisely why I supported Obama in the primary race. I hold Hillary Clinton in considerable esteem, but she could not and would not have given this kind of shot in the arm to the Democratic party (an institution which the Clintons have tended to treat as if it were merely their own support structure.)

Another thing: the split-funded McCain/RNC ads, designed to stretch out the McCain budget, are made of fail. The opening 'Obama is a scary black terrorist' atmospherics don't really work when it ends 'and so is Nancy Pelosi.'

I am curious what the median contribution is. I haven't happened upon that statistic.
