Gibbs actually got away from his main point; he should have pivoted to "I don't think you are an anti-Semite, Sean, just because one of your guests was". But trying to make a nuanced point is pretty much a fool's errand when your interlocutor is a halfwit thug like Hannity.
So Hannity asks him "is Obama friends with a terrorist?" and rather than let him answer, kept ramming the same question down his throat. It wasn't really a question, it was a point.
So Gibbs did exactly the same thing to Hannity, and Hannity fell for it. Goddamn he's stupid. And Obama's people are really good. Has there ever been a Democrat candidate whose people know how to handle the dumbass media so well?
Celeste Fremon at WitnessLA blog caught this bit of FOXiana after the debate:
In a very odd moment I happened to catch at FOX News, conservative polster Frank Luntz, who had gathered together a focus group to watch the debate, asked for a show of hands as to who won the thing. Unfortunately for Lutz, the majority said Obama had won. This didn’t work for Luntz. Nor did it work for FOX anchor, Brit Hume, who began looking a bit sickly.
Luntz decided he could save what was turning into an icky situation. (After all, he’s Frank Luntz always the smartest guy in the room, just ask him.) So he eyed one guy whom he’d determined was a McCain supporter and said, “But people said that McCain was better on the economy, why did you think so?” (Or words to that effect.) The McCain guy immediately catches the tossed ball. “Oh yes,” he says and proceeded to expound as to why.
So, says a slightly cheered Hume, the majority thought that Senator McCain did better on the economy?
Yes, beams Luntz. But then he made a fatal mistake. He turned to his focus group members and asked them how many thought McCain did the best on the economy.
Around six out of the 25 panel members raised their hands. At that juncture, Lutz was not foolish enough to ask how many think that Obama did better on the economy. Instead, he simply lied. “Okay, that’s about half who thought McCain did better,” says Luntz, lying like a rug, as the camera quickly cuts away.
Awesome. This is actually the only way to deal with someone like Hannity as a Democrat...he's not going to let you respond honestly on the merits, so you force him to go on the defensive and filibuster. Colmes ended up bringing the conversation back to Earth, but it would have been a victory for Gibbs either way.
"Who cares about a dipshit like Hannity, it's Obama who's the effing Anti-Semite. And just about every other black guy in the whole damn country too."
And I'm sure you'll offer up proof of this, right? I'd wager dollars to donuts that you know neither any blacks nor Jews and that you probably refer to them using words that start with N and K. Crawl back under your rock, Adolf...
I think people are kind of seeing what they want to see in that - Gibbs didn't really shake Hannity, throw him off the question of Ayers, and certainly didn't "prove" anything anti-semitic about Hannity (who, with all his flaws, does not seem to have the problems with Jews or Judaism Gibbs is trying to auggest). Colmea, I think has the "pox on both your houses" pretty right in that instance - Hannity interviewing Andy Martin doesn't make him a terrible person, and Obama sitting on a board with Ayers doesn't mean he subscribes to those views. It's annoying that elections come down to this nonsense. I think there's plenty to knock Hannity for, but it's a challenging thing to do when his success is mainly built on personal charisma, and his "news shows" have little to do with actual news. The biggest knock on Hannity, I think is that he's neither thorough, nor especially illuminating on most of the issues of the day, as a "journalist", whatever he seems to believe that to be. Those problems mostly mean an audience would be better off not watching him... but as long as he can rattle Democratic spokespeople like Gibbs, he's sure to have a job. Feeding it strikes me as worse than ignoring it.

Yeah, I don't think he was literally accusing him of antisemitism, but rather making the point that the smears on Obama are no more or less justified than similar guilt-by-association charges against Hannity.
This is a stupid point; Sean Hannity isn't running for president.
A president's relationships are more relevant than Hannity's. Gibbs in fact grants legitimacy to hannity's argument by putting martin on par with Ayers.
I didn't watch Hannity and Martin (you couldn't hire me to do that) but I have to ask: Did Hannity disagree with Martin on the air? Did he dig into Martin's anti-semitism and call him on it?

You really should see that special. Most absurd thing I've ever seen.

Which, really, was Gibbs' point, no?
