Momma said wonk you out

MEET YOUR NEXT TREASURY SECRETARY.

imagestimothy-geithner-small1.jpg

In other major cabinet news, Timothy Geithner looks like the next Treasury Secretary. Geithner was a former Rubin protege, and most recently, served as the chairman of the New York Federal Reserve. He's been heavily on the side of the interventionists -- word was that he opposed Paulson's catastrophic decision to let Lehman Brothers fail -- and he understand the crisis better than virtually anyone else in the country. For more on Geithner, read Bob Kuttner's profile of him from a few months back, which looks at the way his experiences over the past few years have radicalized him. And if you want even more Geithner, read Noam Scheiber on his relationship with Larry Summers. Summers, incidentally, will be a senior adviser in the White House. That position won't have the managerial authority of Treasury Secretary, but it probably means more proximity to Obama, and thus the possibility of even more influence over his thinking.

the chairman of the New York Federal Reserve

President, not chairman.

Stephen Friedman is chairman.

The next Treasury Secretary has crazy hair.

Good. It's not like we need any radicals who'll shake up the existing order or anything.

I looks like Bradley Whitford could play this guy, too.
