BREAKING: NEVADA JUDGE OKAYS AT-LARGE CAUCUS SITES.

Well, despite what our esteemed former President believes, the Las Vegas at-large caucus sites for workers unable to get home in time have been declared legal. The teacher's union, which endorsed Hillary Clinton, believed the extra caucus locations gave members of the Culinary Union, which endorsed Barack Obama, an unfair advantage.

I'm all for measures that make it easier for people to caucus. Ideally, I believe they should be applied evenly, so that workers in many industries have the opportunity to caucus close to their job sites. That isn't the case in Nevada, but in my book, increased voter participation is always a good thing. I will also second Paul: Caucuses are bad. We should definitely get rid of caucuses.

COMMENTS

Surely casino workers, who work on Saturdays, deserve more consideration than teachers, who generally don't.

Caucuses suck. Let more people decide who's going to govern. Smells like democracy spirit, man.

I believe (as per the CNN article you linked) the teachers' union didn't endorse Clinton, but that many of their leaders did.

What if, say, Ohio funneled money for modernizing their voting machines into mostly well-off, mostly white areas, leaving other places with fewer machines per capita? As I understand it, this is the same basic argument against the at-large caucuses -- that some people are being benefited and others not in a system that needs to be equitable.

I don't know the specifics of the NV case, so I can't say if that's true or not. However, the idea that getting more people to vote or caucus is always good is ridiculous. If one class is being enfranchised more, that is a de facto disenfranchisement of other classes.

It's rather refresing to see a teachers' union taking it in the neck for once...

All Power to the Soviets!

Caucuses are never going away are they?

I didn't have much sympathy for the teachers but I still think the workers at McCarran are getting screwed.

Zowie! Corrupt union goons lose!

Teachers don't work on Saturdays, but these teachers were moaning about the janitors who work in their schools [and don't belong to their union], who apparently are working Saturdays. Of course, they've had since March of last year to give a rat's ass about those janitors. This is why I have no sympathy for those teachers. They're dishonest.

Thanks, Pheobe. Your comment made me laugh out loud!
