THEOCRACY WATCH.

Wow.

"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."

This appears to have freaked out even Joe Scarborough, who noted that "evangelicals should be able to talk politics ... some might find that statement very troubling, that we're going to change the Constitution to be in line with the Bible. And that's all I'm going to say." Of course, it's a bit unclear to me what amending the Constitution to "God's standards" would require, although I presume that it wouldn't involve the banning of pork products.

Changing the Constitution is not very easy, but if God the Almighty is the all-powerful guy they say he is, why doesn't he just change the Constitution himself and save us the trouble?

On a serious note, is there any reason why anyone should consider Huckabee a viable candidate for president after saying stuff like this? In any sane world he'd have instantly disqualified himself. Jesus H. Christ.

Presumably Huck was talking about God's standards on abortion and gay marriage. Not going to happen, so no big deal.

I suspect this doesn't actually mean as much as it sounds like it means.

Courtesy of Juan Cole, I have some proposed language for Huckabee's amendment:

The United States of America is a country that was founded based on belief in:

1.the One God and the necessity of submission to His commands;

2.Divine revelation and its fundamental role in setting forth the laws;

3.the return to God in the Hereafter, and the constructive role of this belief in the course of man's ascent towards God;

4.the justice of God in creation and legislation . . .

After all, if it's good enough for the Iranians, it's good enough for us.

That is the scariest thing I think I have ever heard a politicial say. Go Romney, Go!!!

"And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."

WAIT!! I thought their point was that the Constitution already *was* in "God's standards," and that's why it's a religious nation.
