TODAY IN MEDIA SEXISM.
A blogger at Swampland (via) is inventing a mythical catfight between Pelosi and Clinton because...another (male) member of Congress endorsed Obama. I'm serious. Expect her on the Times op-ed page -- if it's still in business -- within the decade unless they decide to give it to Althouse or Camille Paglia instead. The first commenter: "Someday political historians will write books on the damage done to political journalism by the legacy of Maureen Dowd. This will be good for at least a footnote for somebody." Indeed.

Oh, spare me from Hillary as the poor victim of sexism muddle.
As a woman, I am so sick of it.
People talk about how they like it that Obama doesn't use race as a card to play the victim or to cause controversy and yet, from all sides we get the poor woman crap.
Hillary is anything but a victim. She makes choices and uses her gender when it's convenient. Her tears were for herself and not for anything or anyone else.
She is very good at manipulation and knows if she plays victim everyone will come out and take up the feminist flag to prove they care.
In reality, Hillary is way too strong to be a victim to anyone. And frankly, I have seen people treat her as an equal. If she is tag teamed it's because she is equal. If criticized it's because she is equal.
To tread on egg shells regarding Hillary and saying you cannot challenge her or treat her as the same as a male is what is sexist.
She wants to be president for gods sake. If she is not allowed to be treated the same as the guys then she has no business being president.
Enough with this Hillary as victim and those mean men crap from the press.
I never wanted to be treated as anything but as a person and the same as the guys. I don;'t want special treatement because I have a vagina.
And Hillary should not either.

Don't forget Phyllis Schlafly! Perhaps she's too liberal for their op-eds at this point.

vwcat,
Jackass, she's not a victim in that she's not giving up but fighting on. The press--beyond her control--is not "mean" but bigoted (Misogyny is not simply being rude, but being intolerant and hateful). Besides, she has no control what the press says. When have the guys been treated to nearly the same scrutiny as her?
This is not about defending her but calling out the press for their bigoted nonsense. Attack her on her policies, campaign donors, key advisors, rhetoric, but not misogynistic stereotypes or by holding her to impossibly high standards that no other candidate is put to.

vwcat,
One more thing: Yes, I know you're a woman (as if that's an excuse to be a damn bigoted fool).
Wait a second, Maureen Dowd is that you?

Aren't we all lucky to have Davidson there to make these value judgements for us!

Wait, you're seriously suggesting that there's nothing sexist about an article saying the Republic might not survive if two women are in powerful national office? Seriously?

The media bias and sexism against Hillary is well documented. If anything Hillary has underplayed it. It is hard to listen to bile from other women who refuse to acknowledge what is happening right in front of their own eyes. Maybe this is because if they did, they would have to acknowledge what is happening in their own lives. Obama by the way is more than happy to play the victim card when it suits him--as in relation to Bill Clinton--and the race card as in letting his national co-chair attack Hillary for not crying about Katrina.

I am glad to see the real issue coming out. We will have made real progress when Obama uses the word misogyny in public. Our collective bias towards women in particular is at once glaring and still not acknowledged. The press needs to explain to the ignorant bigots of the world what the word means at every opportunity. Personally I do not support Hillary at all but I'm sick and tired of the petty non-issue based crap heaped on Hillary. I don't feel sorry for her, I'm just disgusted by the ignorant bigots leading this country in politics as well as in the media.
