WHEREIN THE NEW YORK POST MAKES THE BIRTH OF A NATION SEEM POLITICALLY CORRECT

Today, The New York Post ran an editorial cartoon that combines political commentary with local news. Riffing on a recent story about a chimpanzee attack, Sean Delonas depicts two police officers chatting after shooting an ape. As the chimpanzee appears to bleed to death, one cop quips, "Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill."

The logical inference is, of course, that Obama is the dying chimp. I'm not even going feign to understand what went through the minds of the all of the editors who thought this would be okay to publish, let alone that of Delanos. Understandably, Al Sharpton and New York governor David Paterson are demanding an explanation for the offensive cartoon.

Anyway, here's a pro tip for Post editors. Things you should emphatically not compare the president to: jihadists, characters from Harriet Beecher Stowe novels, and chimpanzees. Not implicitly, not explicitly, not ever.

COMMENTS

Thank you. No one should ever be allowed to criticize or satirize the Dear Leader. I remember how no one ever compared GWB to a chimp or Clarence Thomas to an Uncle Tom. Thank goodness we have apparatchuks like you to ferret out any non-approved criticism.

The cartoon was just stupid. Where did the cartoonist and/or editors think it would lead people to think? I think Col Allen, the NYP editor, thinks any controversy is good, but this probably made Murdoch wince -- and it ought to.

I am not defending the cartoon; it has racial connotations that a very dull person should be able to see with a moment's thought. That said, I would imagine that the thought behind the cartoon was likely something along the lines of "This stimulus bill is so incoherent it looks like it was written by a team of monkeys!" rather than something more overtly racist directed at Obama.

As I say, I'm not defending the cartoon. Thinking about it for a second would have spared the cartoonist a headache and a lot of people pain. That the second of thought wasn't taken is not an excuse but an indictment.

The worst problem is that it wasn't even funny, or good satire, or nothing. Only a dittohead would have laughed, because of the meanness in the cartoon, not because it was funny.

Comrades: I too was as shocked as you are by this despicable cartoon, and - between my sobs of rage - I was beginning to craft a letter urging a law to prevent such "hate cartoons". But, then I noticed that the cartoonist hid a secret message in the hair of the chimp, containing names of others and not including the name of our Great Leader, The One, Barack Obama.

All comrades, go! Look very closely at the names that the patterns of hairs spell out. Take all the time you need, even hours if necessary.

I support Mr. Sean Delonas and his exercise of his free speech right 100%. Mr. Delonas made a critical analysis of the Obama stimulus fraud and wrote a thoughtful cartoon about it. The Obama stimulus is an out-of-control beast that needs to be stopped.

Dissent is not racism. To those offended by the cartoon I say "get over it."

24Ahead is right...It's all Nina's fault.

Obama didn't write a word of the stimulus.

Tough to beat the old anti-irish Punch and Nast simian cartoons. The anti-Japanese WWII versions were definitely the weakest.

Chimpy McBush couldn't even use tools so that is an insult to the apes.

Our President is No Chimp!

Get off this neo puritan/McCarthite kick, progs. We know you desperately want to play the race card all the time and yadayadayada but it's getting old and only reinforces the idiocity of the leftist wingnutosphere.

And no Obama didn't write that bill, Pelosi Chimpalosi did. Obama just signed it where she told him to.

All American citizens of good faith should immediately boycott all Rupert Murdoch News Corporation media properties, and all advertisers who do not immediately cancel all business with News Corp.

Any attempt to censor promotion and distribution of this boycott call on the internet should be considered on the side of this racist empire

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree here. Smirking Chimp spent the last 8 years comparing the President to a chimpanzee, and I didn't have a problem with it. If someone wants to do the same with Obama, I'm fine with that (even though I recognize there are significant racial undertones to any such comparison). The more worrisome component of that comic in my mind is the violence and the implication that someone would (should?) shoot the President.

Christ, I just read the comments. Where did all these trolls come from?

Oh, Our New Preznut isn’t getting all the respect we demand. Oh, boo hoo hoo. Oh, why don’t everybody love The One? Oh, boo hoo hoo. I guess we’ll just have to get rid of freedom of thought and freedom of expression so that everybody’ll love him. Oh boo hoo hoo.
