HRC SURGE IN NORTH CAROLINA?

Not really. Despite the hype, Obama's still ahead by at least 10 points in most polls. But the state's governor, Mike Easley, endorsed Clinton today. Pertinent facts about Easley? Education, particularly pre-k, has been his primary issue in office. He's North Carolina's second Catholic governor, and is said to have vice presidential ambitions. Easley, of course, had backed John Edwards before he dropped out of the race, so just about every news story out there is wondering if the Man Himself will be the next to endorse.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict a big NO on that one. John Edwards will not endorse any candidate between now and next week's primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. If he was planning on endorsing before the voting is over, he would've done so long ago.

COMMENTS

Given North Carolina's demographics (i.e. unshakable ~88% support for Obama among Black voters; a primary which will be more than 1/3 Black voters; a large number of the kind of educated white voters with whom Obama tends to do well), it's virtually impossible to see him doing worse than about a ten point win, unless his white support totally craters to deep south levels, which it shouldn't.

I tend to agree that the Edawrdses won't endorse before the primary (today, maybe tomorrow, would be the last day for an endorsement to matter deeply anyway), but their lack of endorsement, I think, is more rough on Obama than Clinton, since so many folks expected Edwards to endorse Obama, and now would be a key moment to wreck Clinton's chances. On top of that, I'd point out that Obama is facing in NC the outsize expectations Clinton had in PA: less than 10, and I think any win gets called into question. And with Easley's endorsement, Clinton's on her way to narrowing the gap.

SUSA has Obama with a 5 point lead. Hillary will win NC and sweep the remaining primaries. She will be the Democratic nominee.

After Wright's performance yesterday, Obama's political career is effectively over.

wow, Tom. I'm totally blown away at how compellingly you've marshalled the facts supporting your argument.

shorter Tom: "I'm a clinton drone and I want her to win."

thanks for adding so much to the discussion.

Thanks for the info, Tom, but I think I liked you better when you posted as Petey.
