MCCAIN: THE SOLUTION TO RECESSION IS POLLUTION!

In a speech today in Pittsburgh, John McCain will call for a suspension of the gas tax this summer. The AP reports:

To help people weather the downturn immediately, McCain was calling for Congress to institute a "gas-tax holiday" by suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax and 24.4 cent diesel tax from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

McCain is the recipient of plenty of back patting just because he's a Republican who actually believes global warming is real. Congratulations. But proposals like this one show he hasn't at all absorbed the seriousness of the problem, and the lifestyle and economic changes that will be required to combat it. More driving, more consumption of natural resources, and less use of public transportation are not the answer.

McCain:

OK, everybody. Fill up your tank this summer, go on a road trip, and bring your CREDIT CARD! You're gonna need it to pay for those $10 bowls of BEANS and RICE you'll be eating. And all that increased consumption will keep our magical PRINTING PRESSES running so we can conquer the world! And hopefully, this will keep all you SHEEP pacified, so we neocons and neolibs don't get lynched.

Psst... can we get somebody from DHS to remove this chart from the Internet? We don't want anybody to figure out that gas prices are so high because the Federal Reserve is causing inflation by devaluing the dollar. http://i9.tinypic.com/80zdc1h.gif

Hillary's up to the same
tricks
!

Except she's saying that switching to alternative energy sources is going to make driving cheaper.

hahaha, suckers.

The gas companies have you paying 3+ dollars a gallon. They may drop the price for a few days after a gas tax cut but soon enough it'll be right back up and they'll pocket the profits.

It's a win for the oil companies and you still won't end up paying less at the pump!

McCain's economic policy is just more of the same hands off indifference. Like feral dogs running around spreading recession.

A perhaps more interesting issue here is that the gas tax is something like 19 cents per gallon. It's gonna make fuck-all difference to anybody, even the trust fundies with their Hummers won't notice the difference. McCain's knowledge of economics knows no bounds.

Worth noting also that the gas tax hasn't kept up with inflation for thirty years. No wonder our national infrastructure is crumbling.

Since CO2 lags warming, why does this really matter?
