ON PENN.

At Politico, Ben Smith interprets Mark Penn's departure from Team Hillary as a boost that will lift the morale of all his haters on Clinton's staff. That may be true -- within the myopic confines of the campaign. But to my eyes at least, Penn's long, controversial tenure, and his axing, just echo a string of Clinton managerial mistakes, from over-relying on now ousted campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle to the whopper of this campaign season: failing to adequately contest the caucus states.

So sure, Clinton staffers may be elated. But it's not going to help them win.

as long as we all agree there is absolutely no power to positive thinking

Look at the '92 election. Failing to compete in the caucus states has Bill Clinton's fingerprints all over it. Clinton lost most of the '92 caucuses and still got almost all of their delegates anyway at the convention. I'm sure that's what he told Hillary as well. "Hill, those little caucus states don't matter. Knock out the opposition on Super Tuesday and you can flip all their delegates down the road."

Oops.

whopper of this campaign season: failing to adequately contest the caucus states.

Anyone who thinks the Clinton campaign just up and decided not to contest the caucus states, just really hasn't been paying attention. NEWSFLASH: the Clinton Campaign ran out of money sometime in December. It was forced to do triage and hold-on for dear life in the large primary states. Had they tried fielding serious caucus organizations in states like Utah on Feb. 5th, they may not have been able to hold onto some of the states they did win -- like California. California or Utah? Tough choice...

Not objecting to the overall premise, dry_fish, but Utah actually had a primary.
