WIDESPREAD CONFUSION ON MCCAIN'S ABORTION VIEWS.

A new poll out from Planned Parenthood and Hart Research Associates finds that half of female voters in 16 battleground states don't know enough about John McCain's voting record and platform to say whether or not it corresponds with their own views on reproductive health. About one in four of his pro-choice supporters say they'd be significantly less likely to vote for him once they learn he opposes Roe v. Wade and supports abstinence-only education. Hart reports:

The simple arithmetic of these findings suggests that just filling in McCain’s actual voting record and his publicly stated positions on a handful of key issues has the potential to diminish his total vote share among battleground women voters by about 17 to 20 percentage points in either match-up.

Yes. This is the kind of "d'oh" attack ad I'd like to see. "Did you know John McCain opposes Roe and would keep your health insurance company from covering birth control pills?"

But McCain is a maverick, right? Because he didn't suck up to the fundies in 2000, alot of people probably believed his views on key fundicrat issues (abortion, contraception, gay rights) were more "moderate".
Well, they never were - he was just never challenged on these issues. Now he's in a tough place - he needs support from the religious conservatives, but that may make him toxic among Independent and moderate GOP women. Too bad.

Right on! The Clinton and Obama campaigns need to start hammering home this point immediately, thus chipping away at the "moderate" myth!

It's not just an antipathy to reproductive rights. On his website, McCain says that Roe should be overturned and abortion issues returned to the states.

Justice Stevens, a reliable liberal voice on the Supreme Court, is likely to retire soon - he's 88. If McCain keeps to his pledge, he would replace Stevens with a conservative justice who would help the other four Roe opponents overturn the ruling.

Which also raises the question of what other rights would be imperiled at the SC - birth control, gay rights, church/state separation, etc.

This issue needs much more attention than it's been getting.

People vote against their own self-interests? They choose a candidate without knowing what they'll actually do in office? Unheard of. McCain probably makes a lot of these people feel safe, especially when paired against that inexperienced black muslim. I'll believe people will vote rationally when I see it.
