ACORN DIRECTOR: WHAT ARE TEA PARTIES?

I'm sort of fascinated by the latest ACORN conspiracy theory, that ACORN activists are crashing right wing "tea parties" in order to sabotage them. I'm fascinated, because like Steve Benen, I don't know anyone who actually cares about these things. Obama's approval rating is in the 60s. The country is growing more optimistic about his presidency. I could see being concerned about the tea parties if they legitimately comprised some sort of mass movement centered around widespread public discontent with the president, but it just seems to be a bunch of sour grapes from hardcore conservatives who would hate Obama no matter what. The far right also seems to have a hard time mobilizing without an evil enemy, someone to hate.

So I was interested in finding out where the rumor started. It turns out, it started on somewhere on the Internet. I don't mean that someone reported ACORN activists showing up at a tea party and wrote about it on their blog, or that some local newspaper published a story to that effect, I literally mean it started on the Internet. Michelle Malkin linked to this post on a conservative blog, which linked to this post on an online tea party Internet forum. Meanwhile, Malkin has been twittering about this for days, hyping the ACORN/Kos/Obama conspiracy axis. All because someone wrote something on the Internet. I believe this policy can be explained as "trust, but don't verify."

In any case, on the off hand possibility that there was some truth to the idea that ACORN was orchestrating the sabotage of tea party gatherings, (maybe some local chapter had organized a counter-protest or something) I called up ACORN Executive Director Steve Kest and asked him about it. "I saw some mention of this on a blog, I have no idea even what the tea parties are," Kest said. He then asked me to explain to him what the tea parties were having only just heard about them yesterday. When I laughed, Kest said, "Seriously, do you know more about what the deal is here?"

Naturally, ACORN being completely unaware of the tea parties is just more proof that they've conspired to destroy them.

COMMENTS

Just wait until the ACORN goons find out that these people are tea-bagging at these meetings!

> All because someone wrote something on the Internet.

There's inaccurate information on the Internet?

Its times like these that the Founding Fathers included the 2nd amendment in the Bill of Rights. You underestimate rage focused at the assault upon my freedoms and the pillars of the constitution. I never protested in my life. Until recently, I felt Bush II was the worst thing to happen to America since McCarthyism....no longer. I am now organizing a Tea Party and ready to give up my comfort in life to fight for American posterity.

Your answer is bigger and more powerful government....why? What in the last 6 months convinces you the federal government can competently run a hardware store, nevermind banks, car companies, insurance companies, stock markets, hospitals, and schools?

Just remember,it took the Federal government 3 days to get water to the Superdome!

ACORN is so evil that it's sabotaging the tea parties even if it's not sabotaging the tea parties. The rumor is:

They are getting petitions signed, misrepresenting them as opposition to the Obama agenda. They explain something different than that written on the petition.

And here's how evil that is:

whether it is true or not, part of the goal is achieved none the less. As a result of people having to be aware of the possibility of dirty tricks like this, doubt is cast on all efforts to gain signatures on anything. That is what the ACORN lives for. Sewing doubt in legitimate democratic processes.

If you talk to Kest again, ask him if he knows how to sew.

whether it is true or not it's still true!!

Steve M. is way too rational. Get with the program, man. If a comment on a blog fits your worldview, don't fight it.

Until recently, I felt Bush II was the worst thing to happen to America since McCarthyism....no longer. I am now organizing a Tea Party and ready to give up my comfort in life to fight for American posterity.

I see this is the new version of "I use to be a liberal, but since 9/11 I'm outraged over Chappaquiddick."

Tom, Tom, Tom: It took a Republican government full of incompetent ideologues 3 days to get water to New Orleans. I mean, if you thought Bush II was bad, why do you think his performance must be blamed on teh government?

I'd be more likely to believe the Acorn Executive Director's denial if he hadn't pretending not to know what a tea party is. It is also specious to point to Obama's approval rating as evidence no one cares about this. You have to look at his disapproval ratings, and they are higher than most presidents in their first months. Democrats love Obama and their enthusiasm distorts the poll, concealing the lack of approval among Republicans and increasingly, Independents. You have to be living in a bubble not to know what a tea party is and why they are being organized.

So the counter argument is that these tea party saboteurs are just conservative's generating rumors to vilify ACORN via the internet. Hmmm, maybe that's true. Keep in mind that this is an internet site too and who knows who the hell is telling the truth. There in lies one major flaw with the internet. It's a great pool of information but also a cesspool misinformation. I don’t understand why anybody could approve of what it is this administration is doing to the economy. Its quite clear to me what’s going on here. We have a president who has all of the countries credit cards in his hands and is maxing them all out before he files for bankruptcy. please, if anyone can explain this George Suros financial mumbo jumbo to me to seem as though he's not trying to break our bank as he did the UK bank for his own gain I might be able to sleep better. I'm not looking for a fight just answers.

This is a win-win for the right.

It simply does not matter that the rumors are false. When zero ACORN people disrupt zero tea parties, the right will claim success since all ACORN people were scared off and/or all tea parties were successfully monitored.

Yep, those lefties sure are pussies!

"It is also specious to point to Obama's approval rating as evidence no one cares about this. You have a source for this? Because every polling source I've read (and that's most of them) says his support among independents has been steadily improving. It's only Republicans fueling his increasing negatives.

What the hell is a tea party?

Some old women sitting around, sipping a weak liquid, telling old stories?

/ Oh... It's gun nuts sitting around, telling old stories.

same thing.

I am referring to the latest Pew poll. Polls vary, just as they did during the election. The independent favorables were 57%. That is less than the proportion of Independents who voted for Obama. People seem to be interpreting that in a glass half-full half-empty fashion. Some sources are suggesting that Obama's foreign policy is turning off Independents. Try this URL:

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1178/polarized-partisan-gap-in-obama-approval-historic

According to Pew, Independent disapproval went from 14% in Feb to 27% in March:

http://people-press.org/report/?pageid=1484

Does Michelle Malkin support teabagging?

If you follow the links down to the original "warning", you'll find that it came from some spammer trying to move a couple crates of cheap pepper spray they picked up along with their crappy plastic Christmas trees from some Chinese sweatshop.

In short, right-wing wackos will believe any scammer who wraps their merchandise in the flag. As bloody usual

I wouldn't consider this a rise in Obama's popularity!

When people are free to just go and vote, and they are not being confused with trick questions, here is what people really think about Obama:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29493093
And this is not from a conservative site! SO don't be so smug. There wouldn't be so many tea parties across the country if people were as happy with Obama as you seem to think they are!

Your answer is bigger and more powerful government....why? What in the last 6 months convinces you the federal government can competently run a hardware store, nevermind banks, car companies, insurance companies, stock markets, hospitals, and schools?

Yes, if there's one thing we should all remember, it is that banks, car companies, insurance companies and the stock market would have done just fine if it wasn't for that pesky government and its bailout money. This is not a smart argument, Tom.

Just remember,it took the Federal government 3 days to get water to the Superdome!

Say, you're right! I hope we elect someone who has minimal competence to run the government next time! Oh. Wait.

There wouldn't be so many tea parties across the country if people were as happy with Obama as you seem to think they are!

Did this line of reasoning ever work when millions of Americans went out to protest going to war? Did that make a dent with you, Betsy?

Dear Anonymous,
Even though your comment does not make sense, I will try to answer it anyway.

Number 1, never was there "millions of Americans" protesting in streets against "going to war". (Also remember that many Democrats voted for going to war. OH Yes, that's right, they were mislead by Bush! Nice line, but it is THEIR responsibility to know what they are voting for BEFORE they vote for it, just like the stimulus package that NO ONE read! Ignorance is NOT an excuse!

Number Two: And here is where your comment does not make sense. Even if your were correct in saying that "millions of people went out to protest", Bush's popularity plummeted with the war. You Democrats are expecting us to swallow the fact that everyone (over 60%) is thrilled to death with Obama, and my point is they are not! Just look at the poll I posted. You are just vomiting MSM hype. Again, if they were happy with Obama, they would NOT be out protesting ALL OVER the US at HUNDREDS of locations, which is WAY MORE than you ever had with the war protesters. I know the MSM made it look like a large crowd, but it didn't work. Just like the "bus load" (single-not plural) of Acorn demonstrators that went out to demonstrate in front of the AIG executives houses. Yeah, cover the 30 people that showed up there, but pretend the Tea Parties aren't happening and pretend that people dislike Obama and the current administration. The fact is: We had to put up with your "f"ing whining for the last 8 years. Now grow the F--- up and put up with it. We are done messing around with you people.

Betsy, there were indeed millions all over the country who stood out in the cold that FEB and asked for the coming war to be halted.I know because I was there. You need to stop pretending (lying)to be something you are not.Are your ideas so weak? In any case please go to your tea bagging party and show us how it is done. And please let us all know when you feel safe at last. Your constant fearfulness is embarrassing and is not very patriotic. Betsey Ross wouldn't think much of your Tory ideas. Also,I love ACORN they do a lot of good in this world, you betcha.

We had to put up with your "f"ing whining for the last 8 years. Now grow the F--- up and put up with it. We are done messing around with you people.

Could you explain that a little more, Betsy. I mean the 'messing around' thing. I'm feeling that you are coming into it.

If you changed the names of the conservatives in this thread to the names of the last true believing communists in Poland at the end of the Cold War, would it actually read any differently?

What I mean by we are done messing around with you people is that we have had enough of you people whining about Bush causing all of this, about the war, about the economy, about everything. It needs to stop. We are tired of being accused of everything when most of this stuff has been caused by the Democrats. I'll give you the war, that was not, but the Dems voted on it too. And again, ignorance is not an excuse. Furthermore, I don't see Obama in a huge hurry to bring the troops home either. Face it, Obama made a lot of campaign promises that were just a bunch of BS, yet you Dems go around pointing finger, acting like your shit doesn't stink when the Dems are as bad or worse than the Republicans.
We are not going to put up with being accused of everything that goes wrong in America anymore. It's your turn now.

"We are tired of being accused of everything when most of this stuff has been caused by the Democrats."

I know, Democrats are such irresistible people, even when they are in the minority, as was the case six out of eight years under Bush II, they always force their evil will upon the congressional Republicans.

"Obama made a lot of campaign promises that were just a bunch of BS, ...

You're admirably quick on your feet, arriving at this razor sharp and definitive conclusion ten weeks in.

"... when the Dems are as bad or worse than the Republicans."

Actually, Betsy, that is almost libel after what the Republicans in Congress have been delivering. Not only during the Bush II reign, but especially during the last ten weeks. A budget that consists of bubbles?

“We are not going to put up with being accused of everything that goes wrong in America anymore. “

I'm still puzzled about how your “done messing around” and “not going to put up with it any more”. This is an announcement of sanctions or escalation of sanctions. Frankly, it sounds rather ominous, or shall we say threatening? I don't recall that the Republicans being all that silent in light of all the 'whining' by the Democrats during the Bush II years. As a matter of fact, I remember reading words like 'traitor', 'un-American' and the like. If that was 'putting up with it', what will be 'not going to put up with it any more'?

I'm sure you're just alluding to you rigorously making use of your right to free speech. Or is there a darker insinuation?

”It's your turn now.”

Finally a point we can agree on.

SRW1:

As much as you would like me to admit to a "darker insinuation" I am totally not that type of person. As hard as it may be for you to believe, not everyone resorts to threats of violence to get their point across. I think I fully explained "messing around with you people" in my last post, and if you are to dense to pick up what I'm putting down, then you are an idiot!

If a member of the OK City Thunder started trash talking the Lakers before a game, they would sound like Betsy Ross. Oh no, I'm so scared of crazies armed with tinfoil hats and no self-awareness!

Thanks for the compliment, Betsy. Hope you feel relieved.

I guess I'll just have to go to bed as dense as before.

Betsy, yes Democrats voted for the Iraq war but they were lied to. Are you saying that Congressional members know have to have psychic skills to know when they are being lied to? Colin Powell, Condie Rice, and Dick Cheney all invoked the 'it's better to be safe than sorry at the sight of a nuclear mushroom cloud' lies. Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld all said the war would last weeks, maybe months, and that it wouldn't cost a dime because the Iraqis would pay for it with their oil money, which was, at the very least, ludicrous interpretations of the facts and, more than likely, politically expedient lies they told to get the way they and PNAC had been drooling over for years.

Secondly, it was the Republicans who controlled the Congress for six out of eight years and passed insane budgets that increased spending while cutting taxes for billionaires and giving a few pennies to the middle class. If we had gotten great new schools, improved highways, shining new airports and hospitals for all that spending I'd be ok with it but we got nothing but more debt.

Finally, you can't claim the GOP are being unfairly beat up in the media and by normal people after their horrible performance that caused people to turn against them. America isn't a right or left nation, it is a pragmatic nation and expect results from the people they put in charge. The GOP sent loyal lackeys over to Iraq and we got 25 billion stolen by them. The GOP wanted to privatize social security and thank God that was blocked our we'd be in even worse shape. The GOP has ignored America's health care crisis while doing all they can to insure medical and Rx corporations make ever more profits while Americans die of unmet medical needs. The GOP ignored a report titled "Bin Laden Determined to Stike Within the U.S." because it didn't fit in with their agenda. There's plenty of reasons why the GOP is being smacked down so much and almost all of it is because Americans were promised responsible, smaller, effective government and all three promise were not only not met but trashed.

Now, if four years from now the Democrats have performed as bad I will trash them too, but, so far, the Obama administration has done a pretty solid job save for a few issues. I'm willing to give them time just like I decided to give Bush time after 9-11. You seem not willing to give our President even three months let alone a year to prove his policies out and instead want to cry about how unfairly Republicans are being treated because of all the problems they created. The real Betsy Ross is assuredly spinning in her grave knowing such a whining, petty person is using her good name as an internet moniker.

Brent, Clinton had plenty of chances to do away with Obama and did not react. If you recall that was before 9-11 and before Bush.

Let's see what has been accomplished in the first 90 days:

First came the “stimulus package.” With only about $185 billion of its $800 billion in spending to be spent in 2009, Obama clearly never intended the spending to be about stimulus but wanted the need for a stimulus to trigger the spending he wanted anyway.

Last week Obama basically gave away our economic sovereignty to Europe at the G20 Summit, when he agreed to put the FCC and the Federal Reserve under the control(or voluntary control)of the Financial Stability Board which would make "recommendations" and which Obama committed us to accepting, on regulation of pay, on regulation of banks, regulation of all firms that are big enough to pose a risk.

The Senate Majority Leader and the President are doing a full-court press behind the scenes to force passage of the DREAM Amnesty which offers an amnesty to nearly all illegal aliens up to the age of 35.

OBAMA quote last week: "We will convey our deep appreciation for the Islamic faith, which has done so much over so many centuries to shape the world for the better, including my own country" Are you kidding? He should have said: "By allowing its women to be subjugated and beaten, by allowing its adolescent boys and girls to become martyrs by murdering innocents, by arbitrarily torturing or executing "non-beleivers" and by imposing a draconian sharia law system upon societies across the world, Islam has shaped the world for the better."

Harold Koh, the former dean of the Yale Law School has been picked by President Barack Hussein Obama to be the legal adviser to the Department of State. Koh will represent America at the United Nations and the International Court of Justice. Koh is an outrageous transnationalist lawyer who believes that American law should be interpreted according to international "norms" instead of our U.S. Constitution.

Obama bringing terrorists from Gitmo into OUR neighborhoods, giving them American trials and allowing them to twist the legal system with ACLU-style lawyers and walk out free men on American soil!

Article 1, Section 9 of the Constitution states, "No bill or attainder or ex post facto bill will be passed." This is exactly what the Congress did about the AIG Bonus Bill.

Madam speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to put a Windfall Tax on all stock market profits (including Retirement fund, 401K and Mutual Funds! Alas , it is true - all to help the 12 Million Illegal Immigrants and other unemployed Minorities! She quotes...' We need to work toward the goal of equalizing income, (didn't Marx say something like this?), in our country and at the same time limiting the amount the rich can invest. When asked how these new tax dollars would be spent, she replied: 'We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our countrywho need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as 'Americans'.

And yes, not only is the GOP being unfairly beat up by the media, which is nothing new, God forbid you have an anti-Obama bumper sticker on your car, you will get pulled over and threatened with arrest if you don't remove it. (google it, it has happened.) Funny from a society that thought it was alright to make a movie featuring the assassination of President Bush. Can you say "double standards"?
I could go on and on and on, but I simply don't have the time.

Look bottom line is respect needs to be earned. In my opinion, it has not been earned. The way this President and his administration has behaved in the first 3 months is appalling, scary and embarrassing.

FOR THE RECORD: I am no longer a Republican either. I dislike both parties equally. And all of these bums should get kicked out of office.

My name IS Betsy Ross, and I am NOT rolling over in my grave!

"We are not going to put up with being accused of everything that goes wrong in America anymore. It's your turn now."

Total right-wing relativism. You're accused of things because the last 8 years were presided over by a dangerous and criminal administration that showed contempt for American institutions and values. Democrats/liberals have not done these things, therefore we are not blamed for them.

O wait---on the day after 9/11, Robertson and Falwell blamed the attacks on liberals, gays, the ACLU, feminists. Now it's our turn? You've been blaming things on "America-hating" liberals for a looooong time.

"Total right-wing relativism. You're accused of things because the last 8 years were presided over by a dangerous and criminal administration that showed contempt for American institutions and values. Democrats/liberals have not done these things, therefore we are not blamed for them."

HA HA HA... I forgot... tax evasion is a "legal" act now isn't it... and wiping your butt with the constitution is showing great respect for the American values. As is bailing out companies so that they can give their big-wigs huge bonus checks. I so easily forget how to act as a "true" american not just as some "evil" conservative... I should start taking notes.

"Patriot" asks if he should start taking notes. No, you should start paying taxes. We're sick of the tax-whiners and crybabies of the right, who seem to be afraid of both life and death. They like "guvmunt" when it kills, but not when it nurtures. They take programs from the poor and helpless so selfish millionaires can dodge their taxes. What kind of human being does that? What kind of perverted political philosophy would advocate that?

Conservatism.

What is most interesting is the conflicting information come from ACORN (notice I did not say surprising?)....

ACORN spokesman Charles Jackson told WND his group will be rallying on the same day.

"ACORN is going to be engaged in a series of rallies across the country on April 15 in support of the priorities outlined in President Obama's first budget – investments in education, health care, and getting Americans back to work," Jackson said.

He continued, "This is the first we've heard of these 'tea parties' and, frankly, a gripe-fest by a bunch of conservatives whose preferred economic policies got us in this mess in the first place is of no interest to us."

What a coinky dink...a pro big government rally on the same day ?

Tea parties are the lamest excuse for self-indulgence and greed I've ever heard of.

I find it ironic that the demonstrators are the same people who oppose statehood for DC. Taxation without representation, anyone?

VIVA La Revoluccion!!

Betsy and Tom, tell the truth. It's not a question of money or constitutional rights or any of the other garbage you are spewing. Admit it, it is a question of race; you hate that a black man is in office. Look at the tea parties, no blacks, just angry white people. You are all scoring big points with the White Supremists and the KKK. I find your hatred disgusting.

Gee, Julia, your information on ACORN reminds us that it takes a nut to know a nut. Who cares about ACORN other than you and McCain ? Walk on.

I too am a Tennesseean and can attest to the fact that Gov. Bredesen holds working people in contempt. Whether it is gutting TennCare or shredding the safety net or workers compensation, this man is a cheerleader for big insurance and big medicine.
