Watching all the white men (Inhofe, Limbaugh, etc.) lining up to call the minorities racists (Obama, Sotomayor, etc.) would be funny . . . if it weren't kind of sad.

But the point isn't to put bad rulings by Scalito J to whiteness or masuculinity; let's ask Sen. Inhofe why he fears "undue influence" on Judge Sotomayor but not on Scalito.

Inhofe's words are stunningly racist.

He's saying white men only need apply.

Sotomayors race is white - her ethncity is latina - when a white american is elected or nominated the issue of gender, race ethncity is never questioned. Judge her by merit. Who do you think your fooling by all that rhetoric!!

Are we seriously going to kid ourselves and say that sex has never entered into a confirmation hearing? Then what happened with Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill? *Ponders!* I'm a mostly liberal somewhat moderate very open minded American. However, even I can see this for what this is. Its complete and utter racism. If Sotomayer had been white and said what she said about any other minority she probably wouldn't still be on any bench. We are supposed to forgive her simply because she is Latina? I guess we should just forgive all those white guys that owned slaves 200 some years after they owned them too. I guess if blacks can hold a grudge that long its ok for whites to hold one from 2001.

I'm from Oklahoma and I can't stand Inhofe, but I understand both points of view. A white judge could never say this and survive. I'm not saying she should not have thought it, but she shouldn't have said it. I read a comment from another blog that read:

There's only one racist group in America:

It is simply impossible for a "latina" female (wise or not) to be a racist.
He was obviously being sarcastic considering the site, but it was proposed to me today that some academics believe this to be true. Only white males are truly in power and only they can be racist. This theory seems outdated to me.

Sotomayor is not white. She is Puerto Rican. Puerto Ricans are largely the descendants of Europeans, Taíno, Africans or a blend of these groups which has produced a very diversified population.
