LIGHTNING ROUND: IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID.
- Barack Obama kicked off a two-week economic tour today in Raleigh, NC, using the occasion to introduce several short-term economic relief measures. The Democratic nominee also added noted Brookings economist Jason Furman to his paid advisory staff.
- Continuing with his focus on the economy and other domestic issues, Obama also announced today a partnership with Elizabeth Edwards to promote national health care.
- The Chicago Tribune has an informative profile of Obama's campaign manager, David Plouffe, who has begun to court top Hillary Clinton fundraisers in New York.
- The evangelical vote: Obama makes headway, the New York Times reports trouble for John McCain, and pastor John Hagee describes being "thrown under the bus" by McCain.
- The horse race: Gallup's daily tracking poll has Obama up over McCain 48-42, indicating a clear post-primary bump for the Democrat. Meanwhile, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis puts up a relatively spin-free strategy briefing video at the candidate's web site. Worth the 15 minutes for political junkies.
- First Read notes the rise of outside "Swift Boat" groups dedicated to smearing Obama in the general election.
- Bruce Bartlett has a nice piece in the upcoming print TNR describing the rise of right-leaning "Obamacons."
- The Boston Globe has a story on the advantages LA Gov. Bobby Jindal would bring to the McCain ticket. Don't forget you heard it here first.

And, of course, no matter how documented a charge, TAPPED will always refer to it as a smear.
Maybe if I'm lucky some 527 will encourage people to ask BHO some of my questions.

If Senator McCain selects Governor Piyush Jindal as his running mate, will the nutjobs who yammered about Senator Obama's membership in Trinity UCC call upon Jindal to renounce a church that could not or would not keep its priests out of its children?

That Rick Davis memo is filled with spin. It's all spin. For example, the graphs for "ideological identification" has a "very conservative" and "somewhat conservative" result plotted, but just one "liberal" result. This makes 2/3 of the graph on the conservative side of things, making McCain look much better than he should. If you plot each side equally, Obama and McCain would come out about the same.
Also, the characterization of the states is laughable. Virginia is "solid GOP" while McCain's home state is only "lean"? WA and OR are toss-ups? In what year? Not 2008.
That Rick Davis memo is simply an attempt to assuage the fears of Republicans after the disastrous "launch" of the general election campaign with McCain's speech last Tuesday night.

Obama is leading McCain only 48-42 after his nomination? Considering the mood of the nation and Pres. Bush' abysmal approval ratings, McCain should be getting creamed.

"Maybe if I'm lucky some 527 will encourage people to ask BHO some of my questions."
I think your own commenter has answers you're looking for:
"sorry to burst your bubble, but Obama would not have any difficulty answering these questions. They are not very difficult, and he is much smarter than you (this much is clearly true after reading just a few of your posts). While you may think that people would be disappointed with Obama's honest answers to these questions, you are wrong. Nobody really cares that much about this issue. I'm sorry, that's just the way it is. Immigration (legal or otherwise) causes big problems for some people, but in the aggregate it is such a minor issue for our country compared to the other challenges we face. That's why no one asks him these questions."
