THE CASE AGAINST WEBB.

I remain convinced. See also Drum.

Let me also add: Sebelius! I could see a case for Joe Biden if he hadn't been in favor of the war. As it stands, I think it would be crazy to pick someone almost exclusively for foreign policy message who inevitably blurs the popular message of the Democratic candidate.

No to Sebelius. It will be a reprise of the Catholic culture wars of 2004. Just google Sebelius and abortion and you will find her current conflict with bishop whoever. I so want to move on from this, plus, it doesn't appear that she will deliver Kansas (not news), and she's not a great campaigner. Think Napolitano would be the better choice.

I don't think the Catholic/abortion issue is really a big deal in light of the baggage brought on by other candidates.
Napolitano is also interesting but she has the same problem that Crist has on the other side, if you know what I mean.

Sebelius is an idiotic choice for several reasons: (1) she's from a small state we won't win, (2) she has no real notable achievements, (3) she has "Catholic problems", (4) she's a "woman-not-Hillary" which doesn't help.

If he's going to pick a woman--or really wants to win--he should pick Hillary.

I don't like Webb or Biden for VP, though Sebelius has some merit. A couple of weeks ago, we took a detailed look at thirteen of the top contenders for the VP slot at my blog. For those interested, you can read the profiles here:

I'm thinking Obama's best bet is to find a candidate whose rhetoric and political philosophy mirror Obama's. If he really wants to change the tone of politics, then he has to demonstrate that in his VP pick. I think Warner might be a good choice if he was willing to hand his Senate race over to Tim Kaine.

Brian Schweitzer - opens up the Mountain States even more, has a Republican LT. Gov and is liked in a Republican state (unity!). Hell, he's even described as folksy in his Wiki page - the press eats that shit up with big spoons.

It'll probably be someone with more foreign policy cred, though.

And let me also add:

Wesley Clark. Military, but doesn't hate cosmopolitan liberals, and we don't give up any senate seats or governorships.

Sebelius is an apostate from the Catholic Church, not least of all for supporting the killing of innocent life in the womb. His Excellency Archbishop Naumann should have excommunicated her long ago. If he continues to disregard this important duty of his office, the Holy Father should intervene directly so that the Church can be rid of Sebelius.

Napolitano! Why isn't she getting any love for VP!?!?

Not a good campaigner, and doesn't bring in any state.

Wes Clark is looking better and better.

Obama's charisma more than makes up for Wes Clark's weird campaign style, and Clark covers all of Obama's weaknesses. They look good on stage together too.

Webb is too flawed. His Northern Irish-Protestant nationalism will piss off too many Irish (see his book 'Born Fighting'). Plus, the judgement of someone who sneaks a loaded handgun into the Senate is very suspect.
