PHOTO SUPPRESSION AMENDMENT DEFEATED.

Last night Jane Hamsher reported that the Graham-Lieberman amendment to the appropriations bill, which was supported by the White House and would have made it legal for the Obama administration to obscure all photos relating to abusive interrogations between 2001 and 2009, was stripped.

Unfortunately, like the ephemeral victories late last year on telecom immunity, this is likely to be very temporary. With Lieberman and Graham throwing a hissy fit centering on the death of the troops, their vow to attach this amendment to every Senate bill, and Obama's support, it is only a matter of time before this passes. While it was nice to see liberal Democrats actually having some leverage, this rarely seen event won't recur once the amendment is attached to a matter that the Rethugs are not opposing en masse; it would easily pass the House on its own merits. The sound you hear is the shredding of the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, and Obama's campaign promises (as well as his integrity).

If progressives want to prove themselves, they should defy unanimous consent and grind the Senate to a halt.

Nothing good is coming out of it anyway, the senate is the most corrupt legislative body in the world.
