VETO POWER. On Friday the White House announced that even if Congress passes legislation reversing the Ledbetter ruling, Bush will veto it. The statement (pdf) said such legislation would "serve to impede justice" and "allegations from thirty years ago or more could be resurrected and filed in federal courts." The basic argument the right is making on this (on the Court and in the White House) is that 180 days is more than enough time for a discrimination filing to take place (even though most states already allow for up to 300 days) . As I've written before, it's rare to obtain knowledge of pay disparities with any certainty in such a short period of time, and often the initial disparity is so small it sometimes takes several years to discover the full effect. As long as Republicans control the White House, though, there seems to be little chance for any real efforts to combat discrimination.

Let's hope the Democrats call his bluff. We've had too many cases of the Congress caving to Bush at the mere mention of a veto.

The president has been threatening to block an amazing number of very popular bills, lately. The Democrats should send him the bill and see if he means it.

If he does, they'll get front page headlines of the president blocking anti-discrimination legislation. If he doesn't, they'll get the legislative victory itself.

Nothing defines the parties better than the legislation they're willing to fight for. At worst, it makes the case for a Democratic president in 2008.

Oh, he means it, alright.
& i don't expect any better from a Dem preznit, either. there is no appetite in the dlc to challenge the Corps on their perqs or profits...

I love their argument. its basically "we don't want our business buddies who screwed people over to have to actually PAY for their discrimination. its not FAIR!"

Please be sure to point this position out to the next republican lady you meet.

The GOP believes they deserve less pay.

"W stands for Women". AHA HAH AHAHAHAHA!

This is unbelieveable, honestly these are the worst people in the world...and yet I can assure you that there are probably tons of pathetic conservitive women who would defend a veto.

Where did the Supreme Court come up with this artificial timeline of 180 days? They're saying that your employer is free to screw you out of pay as of day 181 for as long as you keep your job there? I don't even know what to say to that... except we're screwed as long these right-wing corporate lackeys make up the majority of the court.

If it takes 30 + years to uncover all the damage of the Nixon and Eisenhauer era, There is definitely wrongs that need to time to be assured of evidence before also wasting the employee or former employees cash on a trial with insufficient evidence. Bush , the one to talk about justice with commuting a perjury. The injustice is Plame's ability to get compensation for incompetence. if there was no leak , then why would the adminsitration say they would look? She was on the WMD info detail. Isn't she supposed to be on the front linesof troop movement. The exec . branch should be aware of her status. Ledbetter is similar in the way that Women are dismissed of capable peer grandeur for sexual discrimination. Plame Is good for the labor but only uncovered when the administration and/ Or CEO is full of sh*t from the start. SLoppily , I might add - in a hustle to produce facts you weren't using in greater deployments to afghanistan. If we want to talk duration and 30 years of justice, Why are american jobs going overseas when the american citizen has just as many rights to profit management as corporations. Laws in this time have slacked coproations for cheap labor.. what it really says is noncorporate americans have no ideals for labor since submanagement level is subeligible of american due compensation and commercial status. When you see him veto this , be certain you see a sexist and then be certain you see some one who calls all american workers the niggers of management class.
