FRED THOMPSON THEN AND NOW. Via Marc Ambinder, we have two sides of Fred Thompson, who no one remembers was also sort of considering a presidential run back in 1998:
Fred Thompson Then
From a August 21, 1998 article in Commercial Appeal:
Taking a jab at such career campaigners as former Gov. Lamar Alexander and Vice President Al Gore, Thompson responded to a question about a possible presidential candidacy by saying, ''Contrary to popular belief, I don't think you have to run for president for 15 years. Or four years.''He said he would wait until later this year or early 1999 before making a decision about whether to run. He asked rhetorically whether it was more important to accomplish some important things in the Senate that he feels need to be accomplished ''or spend two months in Iowa talking about abortion.''
Fred Thompson Now
Heading off to Iowa to spend two three and a half months talking about abortion.

While I don't mean to channel Dr. James Dobson, I have wondered about Fred Thompson's standing within the fundamentalist church whose affiliation he claims. See, e.g., http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/printer-friendly.asp?ARTICLE_ID=56112 .
Churches of Christ frown on divorced members remarrying. I wonder whether Thompson's local congregation (each church of Christ congregation is autonomous) has inquired into the circumstances of his 1985 divorce and more recent marriage. (It has been reported that the marriage was in the liberal United Church of Christ, a very different group.)
As an aside, I wonder what Thompson has to say about the rank misogyny practiced by churches of Christ: women are required to keep silent in the assembly and cannot teach or exercise authority over male members.

Senator Thompson is taking a break
He's told the Senate to jump in a lake
His Senate re-election chances are nil
You never see him on Capitol Hill
He has forgotten Tennessee
He's sold his soul to campaign greed
He'll go instead in the state of corn
Claiming phony rights for the unborn
Missing important votes, and how,
That's FRED THOMPSON THEN AND NOW!

Just another wingnut hypocrisy. It's up there with is claims to be anti-abortion, while having worked as a paid lobbyist for pro-choice organizations! Just another sad hypocrite that the blind minions of wingnuts will happily follow as long as he says the magic incantation of Reagan Reagan Reagan.
