MCCAIN DEFLATES THE RNC'S LATEST GIMMICK.

Via Ben Smith, after days of the RNC snorting chocolate milk out of their noses with laughter, McCain reverses himself on tire gauges.

"Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it..."

This isn't a real flip-flop though. McCain's tire gauge policy is based entirely on conditions on the ground.

Obama:

"While we’re on the subject of Sen. McCain contradicting himself," he said,

and outlined his own suggestion, mocked by the GOP, that Americans keep their tires inflated, and McCain's concession that it's reasonable.

"In the coming days it’s going to be interesting to watch this debate between John McCain and John McCain," he said.

GOP - “It’s like they take pride in being ignorant.”

I loved this line from Obama

"I don't disagree that we should inflate our tires. and we can help you by providing you with a brand new tire pressure gauge in exchange for your $25 donation! psst...anyone have black sharpie?"

It's nice to see that Rush was exactly right on how the One's media disciples would misleadingly edit McCain's comments as proof that he agreed with the One's patently absurd claim that making sure all of our tires were properly inflated would do more to reduce our reliance on foreign oil than offshore drilling.

The full context of McCain's comments as given by the news source that the link takes you to reads as follows:

“Obama said a couple of days ago says we all should inflate our tires. I don’t disagree with that. The American Automobile Association strongly recommends it,” McCain said.

But he kept up his broad criticism of Obama on energy: “I … don’t think that that (inflating tires) is a way to become energy independent.”

As Rush went on to say, the vast majority of all the tires on all American vehicles are already "properly inflated". If this was not true he asks, then how many uninflated or serious underinflated tires do you see on other vehicles in any given day.

So thanks Mr. Serwer for proving that "Rush is always right", at least, about the behavior of the liberal press.

Chico, you and Rush are both wrong. Tires don't need to be uninflated or seriously underinflated to cause mileage loss - there's a loss of .4% mpg for every pound of underinflation so a loss of 3% mpg only requires underinflation of 7.5 pounds, which would not be visually noticeable, and is extremely common.

the situation on the ground...brilliant. be forewarned...i'm stealing that line.

This is what McCain originally said in response to the tire pressure thing Obama said:

"Yesterday, he suggested we put air in our tires to save on gas. My friends, let's do that, but do you think that's enough to break our dependence on Middle Eastern oil? I don't think so. So I believe that every energy source needs to be part of the solution."

Part of the way liberals fight is to deliberately misconstrue their perceived enemies' positions.

El, you are kidding, right? I mean, that's a joke...the whole reason for this fracas is that the GOP misrepresented Obama's quotes by stating that his suggestions about tire pressure represented the sum total of his energy policy. Whether McCain said otherwise or not, the rank and file of the GOP deliberately misrepresented what Obama had said in a sad attempt to score cheap points.

Yeah, offshore drilling won't make us energy independent either. The point is, proper auto maintenance -- only one of hundreds of such demand-side strategies -- would save more oil than offshore drilling would produce.

The problem, El Viajero, is that Republicans are wrong on this. As in, factually incorrect.

"[T]here's a loss of .4% mpg for every pound of underinflation so a loss of 3% mpg only requires underinflation of 7.5 pounds, which would not be visually noticeable, and is extremely common."

Even if this is true, it represents nothing more than a thimble full of gas savings.

At 20 mpg, a 3% reduction in mpg represents a loss of .6 mpg. With a 16 gallon tank, this represents a loss of just under 10 miles per tankful of gas. To which, most Americans would say "Big frickin' deal."

But I am glad that the One and his defenders are willing to look so foolish trying to defend this nonsense. Along with claiming that McCain's ad with Paris and Britney was fill with "racist" images and code words, you guys become the very caricatures that the GOP portrays liberals as being.

We cannot inflate our way out of the energy crisis.
