VICE PRESIDENT GORE?
Vice President Gore? It has a certain ring. Most folks have assumed that Gore is off the VP list, but he hasn’t been slotted as a convention speaker yet, which is curious since Gore is one of the party’s superstars and its most effective spokesperson on energy and the environment.
Are they holding off because he’s a finalist for Veep? And I have two pretty good sources who say Gore and Obama are actively exploring an administration slot for Al. What better post to be sustainability czar than vice president?
Yes, he’s been there, done that, but this would be entirely different. And yes, Gore is an insider and Obama is anti-Beltway. But Gore in his eight years out of office has entirely redeemed himself as an outsider. He may be fifty pounds heavier, but he’s at least fifty pounds lighter in having liberated his own compelling voice. Consider the checklist:
- Stature? Definitely.
- National security credibility? Check.
- Believable as president if need be? That, too.
- Boring? That was the old Gore, not the new one. (And compared to whom? Biden? Bayh?)
- Help carry a key state? Gore is in his own unique state, and the regional effect has been overrated since LBJ.
- Upstage Obama? Funnily, doesn’t seem so.
This is mostly conjecture, of course, but that seems the main spectator sport this August week. …

Gore wasn't interested in running for President this year. He's established himself as the pre-eminent spokesman and advocate for the environment and he's his own man working on his own terms.
Why would anyone think he's interested in being VP?
Posted by: Jinchi | August 14, 2008 3:26 PM
Gore's lack of a speaking role so far is indicative of how far away from politics he has gotten. He doesn't even fein interest anymore, which makes the VP speculation all the more ironic.
Richardson doesn't have a spot, either, which is another missed opportunity. The one Hispanic Dem governor in the country is not speaking at the convention? Ugh.
Posted by: evie | August 14, 2008 4:28 PM
evie - not true. Richardson has just been announced for Wed. night, along with Bayh and Biden. Still no Gore or Clark.
Though I am not sure being named takes you off the short list. Still, the New Gore would be a dream pick. It makes sense.

Gore...Gore...Didn't he invent the internet?
Kewl!
Posted by: Anonymous | August 14, 2008 5:18 PM
no.
al gore will not do that.
that would kill his "we can do it" program in the event of a close win or a loss for obama.
seriously, at this point, you're thinking like a baby. the 10-year switch program isn't an election year gimmick, it's a survival strategy that has been out and about in the form of lester brown's plan b for several years, among others.
look beyond this election, please. we have a very short time to make this work.

Anyone ever served as Veep in two non-contiguous administrations?
Posted by: Rob Levine | August 14, 2008 5:55 PM
No, the closest is John C. Calhoun, who was vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

I don't think I'll bet this month's paycheck on it, but oh, man -- Obama-Gore! That would be cooler than the bottom side of your pillow.
Posted by: DuBaun | August 14, 2008 6:24 PM
I'll agree it remains plausible. But in the likelier event that it doesn't happen, I think he's at the top of the list to give Obama's nominating speech. He's outsized enough to command Invesco. Kaine is 1b on that list, if he isn't VP himself. (although he will kind of be swallowed up on that field.)
Posted by: along | August 14, 2008 7:43 PM
But isn't Gore busy getting getting rich off trading "carbon credits" or something of that ilk, one of those things that one wouldn't really want in a government official?
A new scam everyday, I'll tell you.

Every time I think this issue through from Obama’s perspective, I come to the same conclusion as Kuttner. I would especially emphasize what Gore WOULDN’T do -- namely, alienate one or another key voting group. In this he differs from every name supposedly on O’s shortlist.
Additionally, as Kuttner notes, he counts as an “outsider” but also brings years of experience; stands for something beyond politics as usual, etc., etc.
Of course, as the comments above indicate, the real question is whether Gore is interested. Like Kuttner, I think a pretty good argument could be made to Gore himself here: it won’t be the same job as last time: this time you get to save the planet!
Still, I assume that the fact we HAVEN’T heard more about Gore simply indicates (as the readers above indicate) that he has given a firm no. Shame, that -- especially since I don’t see another knockout choice in the group.

"I would especially emphasize what Gore WOULDN’T do -- namely, alienate one or another key voting group"
Well, he won't alienate any Obama doesn't alienate. OTOH, he won't bring in anybody Obama doesn't already bring in. Whether that's good or bad depends on whether you think Obama needs to bring anybody in he doesn't already have.

"He may be fifty pounds heavier, but he’s at least fifty pounds lighter in having liberated his own compelling voice."
Jerks like you is why I don't expect him to take the VP slot.

I'm all for Gore. Still, it does not make sense that he turned down the chance to be president when in all likelihood he would have gotten the nomination. Why go for 2nd banana again? Will Obama give him designated authority over certain initiatives?
A point to consider is Gore's own personal investments in Green technology. In the future, would people look at him as we do Dick Cheney having his greasy ties to the oil industry and pushing their agenda? When Green Tech takes off and Al has all these ties to Green Industry, will people shout out about Gore looking out for his cronies and own personal agenda? I can already hear Fox and Limberger clucking with delight.

"And yes, Gore is an insider and Obama is anti-Beltway"
Sadly out of date belief.
Posted by: rilkefan | August 15, 2008 4:26 PM
But Gore in his eight years out of office has entirely redeemed himself as an outsider.
Excuse me, but "redeemed himself..."?!? And what exactly is it that he had to redeem, and especially, *to whom*? That he was right on the Iraq invasion? That he has been right on ecology for the last 20 years? That he never claimed to have "invented" the internet (an invention of the MSM smear machine). Exactly what redemption are you talking about?
He may be fifty pounds heavier, but he’s at least fifty pounds lighter...
Oh right, his weight is crucially important, because if "he's fat" he could never be a Dowdian "Breck girl"? Is he still dressing in brown suits? I'm sure that's also important if he's going to be a leader. Oh wait a minute, he *is* leading. But then I'm sure the Nobel committee checked his clothes closet, and asked him his weight before they awarded him his prize.
This Dowdian "Breck girl" weight crap was used against Gore, and it's being used against Obama (the WSJ "article" (based on a single blog comment) "Too Fit to Be President?: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121755336096303089.html).
By making reference to the whole fake weight, beauty contest attack line, you are doing nothing but muddying the political debate. And speaking of muddy thinking:
...in having liberated his own compelling voice.
I've listened to I-don't-know-how-many Gore speeches, including the 1st Bush-Gore debate. Of those who were at that Bush-Gore debate, or who listened on TV, almost all thought that Gore cleaned Bush's clock (including the MSNBC and *Fox* commentators), and that Gore was by far the more interesting speaker. It was only 48 hours later that the MSM spin started (remember "Bore vs. Gush"?), most infamously with the amplified "sigh". It's not Gore who needed to liberate his voice (unless you're referring to the MSM no longer strangling it). If his voice needed liberating, it wasn't up to Gore, but was the job of the MSM to just let him speak, without being "Dowderized".
I'm personally glad that you're pushing a progressive agenda, but please, don't continue to rewrite (fake)
history.

Can you imagine double-wide Al Gore standing next to emaciated Barack Obama? They can't pair up for that reason alone.
Barack looked skinny next to Ellen DeGeneres. Next to Al, Barack would disappear.

Posted by: marcos | August 16, 2008 11:47 AM
Funny thing would be if there was an Obama/Gore ticket and they won the popular vote and lost the EV.
Gore would then be a two time winner/loser -- depending on how you look at it.
If Obama can tap Powell, that would be a shoo-in victory. If he can't, I think he's simply gotta go with Hillary.
Baye will not deliver IN and he's nowhere near tough enough to be a knee-cap breaking surrogate.
Biden is tough, very tough and has great experience but draws no independents to the mix.
Warner is fluff -- think this year's version of John Edwards.
I'd take Gore as VP over Kerry anyday but Gore won't do it.
Obama needs either Powell or Hillary or a pick from way out in left field.
Posted by: DLR | August 16, 2008 12:30 PM
Al Gore is a fraud. He would be the perfect choice for the Obama con artist ticket. Thankfully for dems, it won't happen because the ridiculous media can't pick the VP like they did the nominee.

Gore is a joke? Funny, no matter how outstanding an individual and his contributions to society may be, there's always some idiot naysayer thinking he can simply label him otherwise. If anyone is a joke RinosaurusRex, it's you.

He would bring something to the ticket. White democrats from the sounth who are still on the fence, not the ones who have already made up their minds, some moderate whites from the heartland, states like Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, that are looking for environmentalists, states that are progressive, like Iowa, and one other thing, that Obama doesn't really need, but more money, he was a fund raising machine in 2000 and he almost beat the ultimate fundraiser in Bush. The RNC is raising like there is no tomorrow. Lastly, if McCain picks Leiberman than wouldn't it be interesting if Obama picks Gore.

Al Gore has accomplished many things in his life:
(1) He lost the presidency to what all you liberals like to say is a less than intelligent W while as a sitting VP
(2) He uses more electricity and natural resources per day than the state of Rhode Island
(3) He was the inspiration for Love Story which probably led to his creation of the internet.
Why not be VP again - I don't know that anyone has ever lost the VP race after losing the presidential race. It would be history, right up Al's alley.

This is just stupid -- assuming that because someone already has a speaking spot he or she can't eventually be picked as a nominee.
I mean, just how hard is it to adjust the schedule after Obama announces his veep pick?
Has it occurred to anyone that one of the speakers scheduled for Wednesday night is just a place-filler for the person who will eventually be named as the VP, and that they'll switch places once the VP is announced?

Barack and Al are talking.
Barack: So would you consider being my running mate?
Al: Sorry, I've already said yes to Hillary.
Barack: She's not the nominee.
Al: They didn't tell you. Neither are you.

Stillbiter, if you ever visit Helsinki, I'll buy you beer...
Let me see... Being a Veep to slick lawyer in mid 40's who has ego like Himalaya... Been there, done that. If Obama asks him really, really nicely, Gore could take him on his ticket. He is, after all, nice guy.
However, speaking seriously, pretty much all reasons against Hillary Clinton apply to Al Gore too.

Douglas and those who think like you. Shame on you for comparing Obama to a nigger. It is pathetic and I think you work for the KKK and Jerome Corsi. Those people who think that the white race is superior. But you are worse than Cain who killed Abel the first two kids for Adam and Eve. It is sad that some humans like you are still living here on this planet instead of perishing and live on the moon or Mars where there is no air. It is sad, very sad. It is so unfortunate that you were created. Maybe you should never have been created. You are just a mutation like cancer cells. You do not deserve to live on this planet. May you be cursed for ever.

Al Gore would be cool to be a Vice president for Obama. Biden or Chuck Grassley from Iowa. I know Chuck Grassley. He is a good guy. Obama is good, he has a whole lot of wide spectrum to choose from.
But the idiots who write on these blogs can really write stupid things. Things that are rotten. Stinking. Why should a man or one who displays a man's name display hate in these blogs is questionable. There are a lot of fools, idiots, haters and bigots walking on the soil of this earth. They have to go somewhere else, maybe the planet Saturn where they will never any K-mart or air to breathe. Here is an example of those expatriates of this earth:
Douglas is a fool. He needs to live on the moon and he will never get any space uniform to stay there, so his lungs will shut off the moment the space craft drops him on that tiny planet. For the other guys who are white supremacists, we should send them to Mars and let them create their own culture. Them fools will never survive, because there are no plantations there and no slave trading. They will die very quickly and no one will bring them flowers when they are dead because there are no flowers over there. That is the way to punish members of the KKK and bigots and hippocrites and those who think that Obama and someone else is a nigger. The punishment from God is going to be heavy, trust me, it will be very heavy..and painful. And it will be a curse that will curse for a long time.

Gore has seriously miscalculated, addressing the overpopulation issue as a "global warming" issue. Stigletz would agree with Gore, but .. he is basically wrong about what drives population increases.
As for all the fraudsters that perpetrated "global warming", I am glad to say that politically, their gambit is dead. that, of course, does not portend well, for Gore.
As for the scientists that dominated in promoting global warming, induced by mankind, I surely wish they could be fired, and sent back to Berkeley, or Moscow, or wherever they came from, along with all their friends.
