FACT-CHECK?

So I've generally been into the idea behind the Fact Checker column over at the Washington Post. Until today, when they decided to take Al Gore's winning the Nobel Prize as an opportunity to do a "fact check" on An Inconvenient Truth, and … not actually check any facts. Instead, they publish portions of a court decision in the U.K. where a judge decided that there were portions of the movie that exaggerated reality. Note: This is a legal decision, not a comprehensive scientific study; the Post actually does no fact-checking; there is no actual science involved here; and the conclusion they reach is that "There are good arguments on either side."

Then for more information, they point you to the official An Inconvenient Truth site, the website of the widely debunked counter film The Great Global Warming Swindle (which has even been disavowed by one of the main scientists featured in it), a broadly criticized counter article from the New York Times, and a site supporting the guy who brought the lawsuit to court. If you're counting, that's three sites that aim to take down the movie and ... the movie's own site. Which equals zero independent scientific evaluation. Thanks, Washington Post, for this significant contribution to the conversation.

Once again, the Washington Whore Post comes through.

Did they mention that Gore looked fat in his tux?

I thought you knew that reporting these days amounts to printing what one side says, and then printing what the other side says, without bothering to check the veracity of either.

It's called "Fair and Balanced."

Please note that "Truth" is not part of the slogan.

Another example was the NYTimes piece yesterday that quoted L. Paul Bremer saying his Order No. 17 has not led to any of atrocities committed by "private contractors" in Iraq, without bothering to print anything from the actual Order itself, which clearly grants immunity to said contractors.

Thanks for posting on this as I was thinking exactly the same thing. Instead of fact checking, the WaPo just continued the political argument of a scientific issue.

All we need is more focus on the state government policy making. And bi-partisanship. Together, that will make the problem go away. Oh yeah, and no Clintons. They came to Washington and wrecked the place. And it's not their place. It's mine.

"Both sides are to blame."

You misspelled "Hack Check".

The hacks checked in, present and accounted for.

Michael Dobbs got his own facts wrong. The judge did not say that there were errors in AIT, but that there were 'errors'. Note scare quotes.
More here.

Is Debbi Wilgoren the sister of Jodi?

In addition to Jodi's "fair and balanced" coverage of the Dean campaign, her article about the origins of the Grand Canyon in which she gave equal weight to the scientific and the creationist viewpoints was a classic of this genre of journalism.

What's funny is that Rush Limbaugh used that Post article today because it suited his purpose. What a tool he is.

I am convinced that the vast majority of journalists in this country couldn't explain the Scientific Method anymore than they could give you a reasonable definition of "federalism", "bicameralism" or "the seperation of powers."

Hey, it's their job to apply balance. They ran a story on the Nobel prize, so they had to balance that story. Their job used to be to provide balance for their journalism. Now it is to provide balance for the world.

Balance means reality gets equal time with unreality. If there are several competing unrealities, and only one reality, true balance demands equal time for all.

Of course, there are an infinite number of unrealities. The quantity of reality to present in the WaPo is left as an exercise to the reader...

BONUS: Check your answer! Note that the actual WaPo closely approximates this theoretical ideal!

They left out "But Clinton did it too!" From their fact chex.

The article now (1630 PST) has 6 links for follow up. The 2 not mentioned in the post are to the co-Nobelist Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and to the Pew Center on Global Climate Change.

Actually the main purpose of the Inconvenient Truth "Fact Check" article was to reinforce the old, old story line that Al Gore is a serial exaggerator. Mission accomplished! Noted climate scientist Michael Dobbs, author of the Washington Post "Fact Check" article, has concluded that "The question is not whether global warming is a fact, or whether Gore deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, but whether he has exaggerated the case in order to draw attention to the threat facing humanity."

Yes, that's right, the question is not "whether Al Gore deserves the Nobel Peace Prize" (what a relief, since the Nobel Prize panel just did exactly that), but the REAL question is "whether he has exaggerated the case in order to draw attention ..."

Same old crap the Mainstream Media used to destroy Gore in 2000.

Thinking about running again, Al? Well, take this -- You're an unreconstructed serial exaggerator, Nobel Prize or no. We here at WaPo have your number, baby. Oh, and you're fat, too.

What a miserable little juvenile clown Michael Dobbs is.

Hey, it's Friday, and Google is your friend when you want to get away to the shore early and beat the traffic. Everyone down at Heritage is gone as well--who else should we ask?

I cancelled my subscription to the pro-Chalabi New York Times in response to the "balanced" creationism coverage referenced above. I think it's really important that those of us on the left stop treating the pro-Bush Washington Post and the pro-Iraq-War New York Times as "neutral" news outlets based on reporting that offended President Nixon before my 10th birthday.

Isn't it time that someone starts a reality-based newspaper?

Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbour were preparing to do some research about that. We got a good book on that matter from our local library and most books where not as influensive as your information. I am very glad to see such information which I was searching for a long time. This made very glad Smile
