DEATH TOLL FROM INDIA ATTACKS RISING.

The New York Times is reporting that Mumbai was rocked by a series of terror attacks coordinated over a space of several hours:

NEW DELHI — Coordinated terror attacks struck the heart of Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, Wednesday evening, targeting at least two five-star hotels, the city’s largest commuter train station, a historic movie theater and a hospital.

The state’s highest ranking police official, A.N. Roy, said the attackers, armed with machine guns and grenades, opened fire and disappeared. Local television reported a death toll of 18 at 1 a.m., local time, but some reports estimated the number of deaths to be higher.

No one has claimed responsibility yet, but recently militant groups located in Pakistan have staged attacks in India. Tensions between the two countries have serious implication for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, which has basically been the site of a proxy war between the two nations. Both Pakistan and India are concerned about the consequences of sharing a border with another hostile power. The death toll from the attacks seems to be increasing, with 58 dead according to a report cited from the Agence France-Presse.

good info. thank you for this news.

it says "attacks in indiana" on the front page....

India's potentially fatal flaw, the one that may well wreck its newfound wealth and its democracy--too much diversity. Like Lebanon writ large. In fact, Indiana and the rest of the good ol' USA may have the same problem--violent ethnic/racial/religious/class hatreds coming to a corner near you, Hoosiers, Californians, Texans, New Yorkers, Floridians, Michiganders, et al.

OK, seriously, the link on the home page has said "Attacks in Indiana" since the story began.

What does it take to fix this?

Super 8 in Muncie still under militant control...dozens of Purdue students flee gunmen...tollway oasis aflame east of Whiting...all communication with Evansville cut off...Terre Haute bridges retaken by state troopers...mastermind planned attacks while working at Fort Wayne Radio Shack?

Yup, the title's already attracted some mocking at openDemocracy:

"...Unfortunately, the online sections of many of the American left's most prominent journals have had little to say about the attacks thus far. The front page of the American Prospect's website does feature one relevant story, confusingly titled ‘Attacks in Indiana'. Other than that, it is largely silent. The New Republic has had a bit more to say, but has mainly carried anecdotal reports from Indians. The ideologically heterogeneous writers at The Atlantic do have some interesting things to say, and I recommend that interested readers take a look at Robert Kaplan's dispatch in particular..."

Seriously guys, sort this out...

Come on, guys. Attacks in Indiana? Fix the headline.

I have always been a wand'rer
Over land and sea
Yet a moonbeam on the water
Casts a spell o'er me
A vision fair I see
Again I seem to be
Back home again in Indiana,
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight, still shining bright,
Through the sycamores for me.
The new-mown hay sends all its fragrance
From the fields I used to roam.
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash,
Then I long for my Indiana home.

India officials said horrible attacks ralated to Pakistan.
