SCIENCE DEBATE.
Related to my post yesterday on the Bush administration's contempt for science and the prospects for a new administration, a group of leading scientists, academics, writers, and bloggers are calling for a presidential debate in 2008 focused specifically on science-related subjects. Topics would include the environment, medicine and health, and science and technology policy. Because, well, contrary to what one might gather from the debates thus far, the gays aren't the most pressing issues facing the country. Sounds wonkerific. We could get into that.

Let's hope something like that would include infrastructure. Not science per se, but still an important part of our economy, our environment, our prosperity & our technology advancement.

God, no. All the candidates are so scientifically illiterate the debate would bomb.

That's a great idea. I would love to watch such a debate. The candidates don't necessarily have to be scientifically literate; they just need to make clear how they make decisions regarding environmental protection, food safety, medical research, health care, science education, and technological research. Are their decisions regarding these and other issues based on science or politics, the common good or special interests? What scientists are they listening too? I would like to know all this before I vote. Maybe this debate should be held at that new Creation museum in Kentucky.
