WE'RE NOT SAYIN' IT'S AN ISSUE, AND IT JUST MIGHT BE A GOOD THING...

Everybody in this town knows that when politicians or political writers offer even a slightly inaccurate or improperly-contexted utterance about Hillary Clinton, a ton of rapid-response bricks are brought down upon their head. And if one smears the Senator, well, they get the political equivalent of The Joe Pesci Treatment at the end of Goodfellas or Casino.

So just try to imagine that, say, operatives close to Barack Obama campaign, or some major politician who has endorsed him, took a cue from former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey and went on television making allegations about Clinton's sexuality, adding insincerely that, of course, if those allegations were true, they might actually be an asset to Sen. Clinton, given the importance of gay issues in America today.

What would happen? Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson's head would explode so violently it would need to be surgically re-attached to his shoulders. And rightly so. It would be wildly inappropriate, something worthy of a conservative front group. But Team Clinton is doing it because, well, when everything is at stake anything goes.

COMMENTS

I think you've got supporters backward. I see more carping about someone used Obama's middle name than anything about Clinton. Maybe if he doesn't like his middle name, he should change it.

Just try posting something bad about Saint Obama and see what you get for it.

Too bad GFR is now MIA. Would have been interesting to read her comment.

Heheheheh.

Huma, Oprah. Oprah, Huma.

Shouldn't Kerrey think about leaving the Clinton-campaign and starting his own Presidential campaign? Think about how experienced he is. All his formative years spent raping village women of Vietnam. That's hand's-on experience with women's issues!!! I mean, how can that be a negative? Only racists who are against sleeping with gooks would be hatin' on that... Kerrey for President! Cmon, it's not too late! Also, I hear he's got that HIV infection totally under control, so no problem. Plus we all know how dealing with a major illness gives people a wonderful new perspective on life.

Have to say this:
GOOD. I want a candidate that knows this is politics not baseball. When the chips are down, there are no rules.

I support Obama but if Hillary wins because she knows how to fight dirty and Obama doesn't, more power to her. You know damn well those skills will be needed next fall.

Um, didn't you just do exactly that?

Nice try.

However, there isn't one candidate in the race who could weather the attacks that Clinton takes on a daily basis from her rivals and the media.

And clearly, Obama has the thinnest skin of the bunch!

When a democrat like Clinton uses racism to attack a fellow democrat that's more than an attack, particularly to the people of color and progressive white people. Another reason not to vote for a Clinton till I die. Many of my AA friends in South Carolina are also vowing to either vote for Edwards or Obama but not Clinton.

anyone who thinks HRC won't be paying a heavy price in the black community when it comes to Kerry or Sheehan's remarks is kidding themselves.

What's funny is that Hillary, for all her supposed toughness, just comes off looking like a chump for having Kerrey (and hatchet man Penn) do her dirty work for her.

Why should Obama have to change his middle name? That's ridiculous on its face.

This attack, right on the heels of the "did he deal drugs?" crap last week and Obama's campaigning with Oprah probably have safely delivered Obama what he needs in S.C. to beat Clinton. The Clinton operation is in crisis mode...they can't make anything stick, so they keep flinging more poo at the wall. It's actual comical to watch and the best part is that instead of retorting, Obama is letting them flail around. I love it.

I agree with your general point, but you used a bad example. Whatever response in the listener Kerrey was trying to provoke, at least he stated facts. Better example would be a variation on the Rush statements recently: Hillary should be proud to be a woman aging - shows off that experience.

Why don't the liberal blogs go as ballistic about the press's, in particular Chris Matthews and his cohorts, treatment of Hillary as they do about any remark about Obama? Just last night he as much as called her a castrating bitch. I've seen nothing about that. Shades of their treatment of Gore in 2000. She may very well be the Dem nominee and we better start sticking up for her a little better or history may repeat itself.

Dawn,

I agree with you that Chris Mathews was off base when he critisized Hillary, but when Hillary people uses racism at the expense of AA, it's beyond imagination (naive??). We expect this from KKK not from democrats. It's not about Obama, Eduards or Hillary, it's about millions of people who might suffer because Hillary Clinton gaffes. Let's hope people won't forget this when it comes to the election day.

Whatever response in the listener Kerrey was trying to provoke, at least he stated facts.

Facts my ass. Obama went to grade school in Indonesia. Madrassa is an Arabic word and Indonesia isn't an Arab country. If Kerrey wanted to say "school" in a foreign language he picked the wrong one. It's like trying to saying Bill Richardson went to escuela and saying ecole. Why not just say school in the first place? I believe the Indonesian word for school is sekolah (via MattY comment thread). So Kerrey was just repeating BS right wing crap.

And the context? Mark Penn must have more reams of data on the words "secular" and "madrassa" than Jabba the Hutt has chins. And that data says they're attack words. Either Bob Kerrey is an idiot or he's a hitman or he's both. I'll bet both.

Why is the Press not focusing on how dirty Clintons (both) are playing with Obama (along, individual, American)?

Is there justice?

>But Team Clinton is doing it because, well, when everything is at stake anything goes.

An attitude we will need to win next November. The problem I have with what Clinton is doing is not that she is being underhanded, but that she is (apparently) being underhanded ineffectively. I'm all for bringing a gun to a knife fight, but you have to make sure it is properly loaded.

The worst thing about Hillary's inept attempts at "bringing a gun to a knife fight" is that she's doing it in Iowa, land of nice people. Last time around, Dean and Gephardt took each other out by attacking each other too hard, and the voters went for those nice polite gentlemen, Kerry and Edwards (who came in second with a warmth, sunshine and good feeling campaign).

The voters are going to punish her for it.

Since the Clintons have a history of slimy campaigning, we should impute everything said by Hillary's supporters to her, especially when she tries to drag out non-issues for a week.

Bob Kerrey is the last person to cast aspersions on others.

Maybe President Obama can appoint him to investigate war crimes, given, you know, his first-hand experience.
